PHUKET:-- The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) has ordered Karon Municipality to move its incomplete seawall – under construction to counter coastal erosion at the popular tourist beach.

The municipality has been ordered to move the wall to behind the line where the sand meets the land at Karon Beach.

Karon Municipality officials recognised and agreed to follow the order today (Nov 23).

The way I read this is they were encroaching onto the beach to allow for commercial development. I personally prefer the whole beach,  a treed and grassed area perhaps then the bars and restaurants. Left to the developers you get a metre of beach a crumbling seawall then the usual commercial mayhem.

...and the initial plans and construction manual was presented to the workers in a karaoke session with cartoon characters on a big screen?

Unbelievable - not knowing on one hand what the other is doing. Is there a Thai word for co-operation?

Logically, it does seem a ridiculous place to build a wall if not down to some sort of bedrock, One good storm, and the waves will be under and over the wall, soon smashing it to bits.

Of course there is :

Envelope

(normally light Tan in colour with the agreed amount of remuneration enclosed) Hello - Welcome!

good to see at least the DMCR isn't in someone else's back pocket

How embarrassing.

No due diligence. No exchange of information between departments.

Probably one department more corrupt than the other.  Crazy.

Karon Municipal trying to do a Surin beach thing?

My bet is that what has already been built will not me “moved”... it will be covered with sand and a new wall built in the proper place...
