Travel insurance for Canadian lost OHIP coverage

Featured Replies

No sure but i may not be covered any more with OHIP.  Which companies will give me travel insurance for outside of Canada?

I see there hospital insurance for Thailand, i wonder if they have option for travel to other countries too?

Depending on the type coverage you're looking for,  I always use Bluecross for private travel insurance.  Most of the time I'm covered by the (work) contract I'm under, but if the wife or I need it, they're solid, and reliable.  The website is straight forward with pricing/policy options.  I'm not covered under OHIP these days either (been out of province too long).  Good luck,  PM if you need more info.

How does that work in Thailand? Are you sure this is travel insurance?

The only reason you lost OHIP is if you are no longer a resident.

If you are a non resident no one is going to give you travel insurance.

You lose OHIP coverage if spend less than 153 days a year in Ontario. Not sure how they know, maybe customs informs them. I'm not sure if i have lost it, but if i buy travel insurance again it maybe worthless.

The CBSA shares data with CRA, so if you were to use your card if you weren't supposed to you may get audited.

However, I am pretty sure that OHIP gives you a 2 year window on your card. 153 days has to do more with taxes you are supposed to file if you are a resident of Canada.

Yes, this part

Other Types of Absences You may also be eligible for continuous OHIP coverage during a longer absence when you are away from Ontario for vacation or other reasons for up to 2-years at a time which may be taken as a full two-year absence or as two one-year absences. To be eligible for continuous OHIP coverage during your first absence of this type, you must typically be physically present in Ontario for at least 153 days in each of the 2 consecutive years before the absence.

I don't have a specific travel insurance policy while here, I'm covered under my wife in Thailand, and a policy through "work".

Right It means you have to spend at least (almost) 6 months a year in Canada or risk losing your OHIP. Then how do you get travel insurance?

I took out cover with David Shield through a broker, it covers me here for inpatient, i.e. must be in the hospital for 24 hours to make a claim and covers me for 4 neighbouring countries, and up to 90 days worldwide emergency when your travelling.

I found them very competitive when it came to the so called big guns, and once your in they won't dump you.

Worth checking out with AA Insurance brokers, I dealt with someone by the name of Wim. I got a David Shield Visa Card once I joined so once you notify them of you being in hospital (within 48 hours) they will put the funds into that card once they have spoken to the hospital and approved you.

If you like PM me and I will provide you with email address of Wim as I did it all via email, Wim was great and very patient.

David Shield also take on pre-existing conditions more than 5 years old, subject to the condition and approval, with there also being an additional monthly fee if you accept the coverage to the pre-existing condition, e.g. I had a stent put in 10 years ago, they approved me and I pay an extra $60AUS a month, worth it for me.

www.insuby.com is a good place to buy traveller's insurance..worst case is you would have to buy it before your trip started.  Up to 364 day policies, direct payment for certain hospitals...usually use Tokio Marine, but buy through the site...they have licensed agents you can call, too.  Residency plays in, and is different for different countries.

In Canada there are so many refugee's i don't think they require a health card.

Still the question of getting coverage when traveling.
