BANGKOK, 30th November 2018, (NNT) - The Department of Land Transport (DLT) and its alliance, consisting of state units, the private sector, and educational institutes, have launched a New Year safety campaign from December to January.

According to the DLT, the agency and its partners are planning three activities nationwide to ensure road safety at year’s end.

They will conduct inspections of coaches at all of the country’s 196 bus terminals to ensure that equipment and vehicles are ready for services. These inspections will be conducted on multiple occasions during the period December 6th-12th, and from December 20th-January 2nd. The DLT stressed that punishments will be handed out to operators who have violated the safety code. The department also strongly suggests that all passengers wear a seat belt during their journey.

Meanwhile, the Department and the Office of Vocational Education Commission will erect 189 car ad-hoc maintenance centers across the country to give motorists basic patch-up works in emergency cases. These centers will also serve as rest spots for commuters from December 27th - January 2nd.

The third campaign is a free general check-up service for cars and motorbikes. Motorists can bring their vehicle to any service center with the sign saying ‘Free Check-up Service’ from December 1st to January 31st.

The DLT will dispatch officials to measure car speed on routes going to the capital and will monitor traffic around the clock.

Safety campaigns need a public that actually cares, listens and obeys. Well, they are clean out of luck here.

How true, but it does change if safety, equality and caring about others is deliberately taught from when kids are very small.

I know, my Thai son was actively taught all of the above from a toddler, by his Thai mother (she spent all of high school, then medical degree then medical specialty in Australia, all on scholarships, she readily embraced the typical Australian egalitarian values and behaviors (and she learned perfect English). She, and I, actively taught our Thai son (here in Thailand) the same egalitarian values and behaviors. And now he's teaching the same values and behaviors to his kids.

No change from the normal maintenance practice then. Free patch up for unsafe, unroadworthy vehicles, there you go Somchai, good for another 5,000 kms.

"The DLT will dispatch officials to measure car speed on routes going to the capital and will monitor traffic around the clock".

So sit on their bums looking at traffic?

That is so moronic.

Nowhere did I see road patrols, impounding of motorcycles/cars, fines, specifically helmets, bad driving or breathalyzers etc.

So  just watch the carnage as usual.

Did you know the highway patrols duty, is to help motorists, not enforce the law?

They do not even have the power to arrest?

So they post pics of themselves fixing punctures, flat batteries, helping children across crossings (that should be done by parents anyway) or holding happy signs with tourists for the free toilets they provide.

They have no bloody idea.

Sounds suspiciously to me like someone obtained a budget for this campaign and then resolved how to distribute some of it to look as though something was being done. No mention of extra police checks paid for by overtime, or hard hitting tv commercials against speeding, inconsiderate driving and drunk driving.

so what happened to the rest of the budget?

Boring. Every year, same rubbish.

Old grandparents standing for photo opp in front of dumb, childish cardboard cutouts with a cutesy slogan.

Then, no results. And repeat next year.

We gave up travelling by road at Xmas and New Year a few years ago.

Found the safest way was to get enough of the falling down water in the fridge and invite people to our place. As they are all 'responsible adults' it becomes their decision to drink drive,  taxi or whatever.

It also means we don't have to get on the road and mix it with the usual 4 drunk on one motorbike crowd, not that doesn't happen during the rest of the year.

I won't even think of pointing out to one of the guys, (expat) who knows it's ok for him to sink almost a bottle of spirits, he has coke with it so it's 'ok,' to drive the 5 kilometres home, that it's a bad idea.

The most dangerous part of my night is the three steps stair to the back door on the way to bed.

Same, holidays at home. And so easy.

Same here. It's lovely in Bangkok because so many Thais leave for the provinces anyway. Best time of year in the city.

We do have our weekends away, not in Thailand, but not when it's any sort of long weekend or holiday.

For all the bashing of Thais for DUI I have the impression that a hell of a lot of expats are just as guilty. Pass any bar around my area with expat clientel and it's obvious by the cars/pick ups parked outside that the majority will be over the limit when they leave to go home.

i note this year new year is on a tuesday, so i would expect the speakers and parties to crank up on friday 28th dec and continue until new years day,of course some Thai's get partyitis where most of the guest's have gone but the speakers are still there as is the karaoke machine,so a handful may persist on into tuesday thankfully i live away out of town, as last year was unbearable living in town.So it looks like i shall have to do similar to Sonkran, provision myself for 5 quiet days at home, i don't celebrate new year, why ? it's just another day so i will venture out maybe on tuesday.

As for the article they have done this every year since i came here and every year the toll rises higher.

Well we stay at home, in Chiang Mai, for Christmas / New Year, but in reality CM over this period is swamped with BKK cars and people. Never mind we rarely go out.

Just before Chistmas / New Year my son and his wife make a rough daily list of activities to keep the kids amused / for the kids to learn something, at home. Cooking various items. pizza at home, brownies & cup cakes, deserts around fruit, crafts, quick spelling quiz, plant some new seeds for carrots ....and lots more.

On the 26th my 2 eldest granddaughters (this year 15 & 9) have to cook and serve dinner, son and his wife, and me, make a big fuss of 'let's see the menu for 26th', then some discussions, maybe additions (always avoiding criticism), then the kids make a shopping list and I take them to a supermarket and have a coffee while they shop, then to the cashier. Guess who pays.

Why bother with a safety campaign?

No bugger takes any notice.

This new year same as every other new year, there will be carnage on the roads.

Thai welfare. They're merely "justifying" their positions.

Of course.

It's all about safety and the well being of the society....

????

Which they insure by sitting in their tents by the side of the road, drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes, and reading the paper, with an occasional glance outside of the tent to look at the traffic
