So the Thai police/government assume that EVERY driver has a phone with permanent internet connection and carries it with them 24/7. As do the banks.

And is carrying your phone easier than a card in your wallet?

No but when they find you unconscious and possibly brain-damaged it's easier for them to ask your pin-code to access the phone and the app as to take a physical drivers license from your wallet.

"...when they find you unconscious and possibly brain-damaged it's easier for them to ask your pin-code..."

Yes, and just how do you think they actually manage to do that?

Where does it say they assume that? I didn't see any part that specified that the old plastic licenses will no longer be allowed. Can you point it out, please.

So Now you have to unlock your phone and hand it to police ?

Yea I wont be installing this app

No you don't 'have to'... you can just give them your driving license !!!....

So many posters are barking up the paranoid tree....  This is potentially a 'convenience' for someone who has forgotten their License (and have the app installed)... that's about it...

Nothing more than that to see here really....

You mean the ones who have a regular driving license they can hand over?

Come on guys... OK, so 50% of people are under average intelligence... but some of the comments on this thread are pushing the boat out on that...

I stand by my post. I talked about a lot of new cars and recently purchased cars. And the fact they do not have plates.

Those who do not have a smartphone will still need to have their physical licence with them.

what does the above have to do with the negativity on the digital licence proposal? IMO it will improve safety,

Oh dear- positive action and attempts at progress meets with disapproval from Thaigeezers yet again.  The first page of this thread is just chock full of negativity and sarcasm.

I saw some berk comment in the BP that it wouldn't go down well in Canada when he tried to rent a car. The dipstick clearly didn't realise that this is in ADDITION to the current driving licence.

Some people just seize on any occasion to knock progress (and knock a lack of progress as well!).

Personally I see this as a great idea should I forget to carry my licence on occasion.

Yes indeed, a great Idea that I am sure most countries will adapt eventually.

For some,  Thais and Thailand cant do anything right, even for a positive move such as this they have nothing but sarcasm. It says more about them than it does about Thailand. if other countries have had digital licenses and Thailand did not, the same people will be knocking Thailand for not having it.

Important information such as location, blood type and allergies will also be contained in the driver's information profile that would prove useful in the unlikely case of an accident.

I wonder who else will have access to such vital information through this agency?

In that case you better tattoo the QR Code on your forehead.  I won't do that because I will always have my driver's licence in my wallet.

And I shall share a secret with many here, my driver's licence does not run on battery, so there no need to switch on the card to see the  QR Code.

I will carry my licence, I will not be installing any apps on my private phone and cops will not be getting access to it

be very careful what you install on a smartphone and permissions such apps request, my phone is for private use not government use and I will keep it that way, it is my choice to have one and also what I use it for

if it doesn't involve an app and just a photo of said QR then not a problem

you can do both. And an App and carry. If you forgot your phone you do have a fall back.

How would it intrude on your privacy? The app on your phone will provide them with information they already have.

What's the advantage? Seems to me like this is just a way for the government to have more of your personal information.

A licence takes less pocket space to carry than a phone.

And. Road safety and carnage reduction should rate much higher than this nonsense !

What's so hard to understand about this for people moaning about how much bigger a phone is than a card.

Nobody is asking you to carry another phone for a DL.  It is not a burden.  You already have a phone.  If you want to you can have a DL app on it.  You do not have to.  It is not compulsory.

And your last line is straight out the TV textbook.  They should not be able to make any improvements to anything at all because road safety is very bad here.

Yes yes, the phone is usually resting on the stearing wheel, that is the norm here...

Cant drive without looking at a phone... :clap2:

It is a good idea if drivers aren't tempted to carry a phone and use it whilst driving. As for 'negativity', this is usually based on past performance analysis of government IT initiatives. One only has to look at Immigration's on-line 90 day reporting to see they still have IT capabilities based on 'Thailand 2.0' technology!

Are you sure Thailand even has the desire and capability to copy other countries' technology. Usually Thailand prefers create it's own mistakes because they have better ideas than those pesky interfering foreigners!

Thank you for actually adding a comment with USEFUL information.

So my license is up for renewal in Feb - but I can do now as per DOT

Wonder if doing now will mean I can have the existing style license (my preference)??
