BANGKOK — Debate continues over whether personal ignorance or a bad education was to blame for a pop singer taking the stage in a Nazi flag.

Nineteen-year-old Pichayapa “Namsai” Natha became the latest of many Thais to court fury for embracing a symbol that causes hurt worldwide, only to say afterward they had no idea what it meant. And blaming a lack of world history education is a defense her fans and even many of her detractors find valid, considering the poor reputation of education in Thailand.

While world history subjects including World War II must be taught, even at the elementary school level, no specifics are laid out and the content is left up to the teachers.

"The content is left up to the teacher".

I would imagine the history teachers themselves are not really interested in world history. So they probably don't teach it.

I would love to know what world history is being taught in Thai schools and who is teaching it.

well, in one of their DM museum;  WW2 was a B-29 being shot down by a P36 (that was also shot down by the B29, but that wasn't as important)

What crap is this? Of course a lack of basic education is to blame, to say otherwise is just sophistry in the face of undeniable and primary responsibility.

You might want to really strain both your awareness and your powers of observation, but the ancient mystic symbol and  the Nazi Swastika are not the same.

Herein lies the crux of the problem. The shouty downers.

That girl had every personal right and freedom to wear that shirt. Boo hoo.

Sorry this is news so late in your small little life but people need not agree with your opinions to be happy or successful.

Freedom really doesn't mean 'doing what you want'.

It's about carrying one's 'right' in a responsible way.

I hope all you SJWs will now go buy a ticket to her/bnk48 handshake and go yell at her in her face in person instead of just pissing in the wind here.

It's ironic isn't it? The hate.

Hate for the little girl that made a bit of a mistake in judgement. Hate for differing opinions.

The internet is wrong!

I teach Thai kids (yes, oh! the humanity!!!). In fact I teach very smart, well educated Thai students. I can tell you there is not a great deal of time spent on ww2. That is in the best of schools.

There is also no time spent on the numerous coups here. Nor what hspp6in Cambodia from 1955 to 1979. Mao? Mao is not a murderer he's a fashion statement. No one bitching about Saloth Sar, Keiu Sam Pan, Tah Mok and Mao. Burma?! Please. No, Thai students didn't learn any of that either despite being at their doorstep.

This girl will be scarred for life for wearing a tee shirt you feel is *inappropriate*.

This is a total distraction from important things in our personal lives and collectively.

Social Justice Warriors are the Nazis of the 21c. It's absolutely truth.

Everyone has a right to say anything and act in any manner they please as long as your physical person is not affected. You're an adult? Suck it up.

Everyone is allowed a voice.

Now go buy a bnk48 ticket and go shout that girl down to her face.
