I need some advice. Usually I have no problem with cabs, but the other day I took one and the fare was 89 baht. I was watching the meter carefully in conjunction with Google Maps, and it looks to me that the fare should have only been 88 baht, evidently the meter was tampered with. What made it worse was I gave the drive a 1000 baht  bill and he shortchanged me! Then he got rude when I accused him of stealing! He began verbally abusing me so I called the Tourist Police! When they arrived, he admitted that I gave him a 1000 bill. I showed the exact change I got, 910 baht, and I explained to the tourist police that I was not a rich farang and it was bad enough I got popped for a bhat on the meter, but then he shortchanges me a baht? He should lose his license! He handed me 910 baht on a 89 baht fare! Unbelievable. The sneaky driver then claimed he didnt have any single baht coins and didnt think Id make a stink. I told them it was the principle of the thing, and they should check his ashtray for those single baht coins, hes probably doing it to 5 people a day and making 5 baht unlawfully.

 

Maybe I was becoming a bit loud, because there was a crowd. Finally since the Tourist Police werent interested really some America guy chimed in and said "Calm down dude, here is a ten baht" and flipped me a coin. The TP said "see, all settled" and they let the cab driver go. They wouldnt accept my complaint though, kept saying something to me like no ekk why. So do you guys think the Land Transport folks will do something about this menace?

Nyezhov,you must be feeling better!Yes of course you have a point!

Please pm me and i will give you the number of a very good Thai lawyer.

You should take the cab driver to court and sue him for all he is worth!

A simple case like this should be done in about five years time.

Just make sure the lawyer also sues for intrest on the one Baht.

The Land transport office will also be very eager to help you!!

I wish the OP a peaceful path and be careful confronting Thais, the next taxi with a sword in the trunk "might" be inserted into you body.  I empathize; money is tight and it's the principle, But how did you get this far in life?  Did you argue with everyone about a few dollars?  Let it go or come here with more money.
