I reckon if you're using a free VPN then your VPN supplier is selling your browsing history, how else would they make money.

If you're paying a monthly fee then it's more likely they're not, but, who knows.

If you use a VPN then google or whoever, google or whoever still sees what you're googling and uses it for their reasons etc.

... so they are selling it , but then again they're not!!

A murderer killing a citizen is not a threat to the junta, therefore not a priority.

Someone voicing his opinion on social media, now that's a national security issue.

...exactly...and that view comes to Thailand straight from the Communist party of China!!

Only thing the new elected government under PM Thanathorn can do is to declare any laws invented and passed by this illegitimate government as illegal and scrap them all. Wipe out all legislation. passed by a government that came to power by illegal means.

Seriously? This all falls under National Security. Anyone tries to touch or repeal it are relieved of position, arrested and put under trial for treason. How can you change or undo anything the junta has done if they have all under National Security? You can't.

I have actually much reduced my participation in Thailand forums since the last coup, and I certainly do not criticise anything that might come back to bite me.  So I will not say anything worth saying here either.

I just want a peaceful existence in rural Thailand while I live out my "golden years".  Current policy: Thailand's politics is none of my business.

some contradiction here, my understanding is by answering the post/thread you are already participating to which I agree is not criticising but participation

Since when and why are VPNs illegal?

if they are copying Chinese internet law, VPN's are illegal period, can not download the software in China, I went to Macau to download/activate mine, last here one of my friends downloaded it in Thailand but still not sure if legal or illegal

Oh, I think living in California is legal - although there are many US citizens, of the more red-necked persuasion, who hold that the majority of people who do live there, particularly those with more dusky complections are "illegals".

Ah, I see what you mean; silly me, I sometimes am a bear of very little brain!

Not 100% sure, but I think that is already illegal here...........or is just downloading it that is illegal.......

Next time you pass one of those roadside checkpoint tents why not stop and ask the coppers - that's if you can get them to look up from "pornhub" on their phones...

Grey area. From a former TV post:

What is a VPN?

(Virtual Private Network) A private network that is configured within a public network (a carrier's network or the Internet) in order to take advantage of the economies of scale and management facilities of large networks. VPNs are widely used by enterprises to create wide area networks (WANs) that span large geographic areas, to provide site-to-site connections to branch offices and to allow mobile users to dial up their company LANs.

Legality of VPN in Thailand. The computer crime act does not prohibit it but under certain sections it is indirectly covered and that is if it is used to bypass government blocks or for illegal activity it is illegal in that the activity is illegal but the technology is not.

My VPN says I am in california

Yeah I use VPN as well sometimes that can make it look like I’m in almost any major city in the United States and around the world because even now there are some websites that I can’t access from Thailand for whatever reason but when I use VPN it’s no problem I can access whatever I want with VPN and I don’t get that restricted access sign.  I can just open up whatever restricted website it is no problem.  It’s usually only one government website from my home city in the States for some reason but it doesn’t matter because VPN allows me to access any website I want.  As far as the Internet monitoring I don’t really care if the government is watching me I have nothing I want to hide, when you’re surfing the Internet or Social Media or whatever online I think everyone knows by now that there is no privacy anymore online and when you access certain websites especially Social Media you actually give up your expectation of privacy because if you post anything online anonymously or not everyone can see it and your IP address can be traced back to you.  Also VPN doesn’t really hide your real IP address if someone is really looking for who you really are hard enough.  That’s a common misconception that you can hide behind VPN, but it will at least fool your Internet browser into thinking that you’re somewhere else which allows us to access whatever websites we want regardless of restrictions.

Yes I use VPN also because I like to play Texas holdem for play money and I changed to VPN when on Jan. 9th. Thailand blocked the poker site that I played on.

Bullshit; 10-15% at most and even then if they tighten up the long term Visa laws more than they already have.

What is new? All totalitarian societies do this. What has changed?

I love Thailand, I wish the rulers of this country would do the same.

Nothing new at all.

I replaced an android phone with an Apple a few months ago and did a data transfer using an app.

My new apple received the data from the android ok.

Not only that but the apple phone over the next 24 hours filled up my contacts list with people I had known years ago and some that had died, this info was not on my old phone but the Apple put just about every person I had called over the years into my contacts list, from dead phones and simms from Thailand and NZ.

So big Brother is watching you and stores your info in the big server, it is able to cross reference and link numbers by comparing them to others you had called in the past, if you put a new sim in your phone and started calling old friends it would have you sorted in a very short time.

Nothing to worry about here , just take care out there and stay clean.

Funny you should say that, I an In Nz for a few months and just got the news from the local watering hole.

many of my long time friends are looking to go elsewhere due to the new visa requirements on income.

Many have been paying the agent fee but will not be able to do this in the future.

Because of this I would hazard a guess as to the future outcome, that would be that the agents will be disgruntled and maybe this could bring about a bit of anger internally and may see a change in the rules, Maybe.
