US files charges against Hicks

Hicks: my life of terror and torture

Australian David Hicks has been charged with "material support for terrorism" and referred to trial by a special military commission at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Judge Susan Crawford dismissed a second charge of attempted murder against Hicks after concluding there was no "probable cause" to justify it, said Commander Jeffrey Gordon, a Pentagon spokesman.

"The convening authority referred one charge with two specifications of providing material support for terrorism against Hicks, a non-capital case," the Pentagon said in a statement.

Hicks is the first detainee at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to be charged under a new US law authorising special military trials of "enemy combatants."

The charge followed a direct demand by Australian Prime Minister John Howard for a quick resolution of the Hicks case amid public unease over the treatment of his country's sole detainee at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

Australian first to face U.S. tribunal

Detainee formally charged after 5 years in Guantanamo; Canadian may be next

Without going into details (about Hicks) I think that the US is 'testing' the Western countries, bringing an Australian as first 'prisoner', to face US Tribunal*.....

Are they afraid to bring an Egyptian, Afghan or Saudi first, causing even more unrest in the region... ? :o

Why, Oh Why does the US not (have) install an International Tribunal or have them brought to 'The Hague' ? :D

Australia Upset Over US Delay in Charging Guantanamo Bay Detainee

By Phil Mercer

Sydney

02 March 2007

The Australian government is complaining it has taken the United States five years to bring formal terrorism charges against one of its nationals. The protest centers on David Hicks - who was charged Thursday and will now face trial in July. The Muslim convert is the only Australian held at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. From Sydney, Phil Mercer reports

I find it amusing that Cuban cigars are banned in the US but folks deemed terrorists by the US gov are kept in Cuba.

Hicks has become an embarrasment for howard and his bunch of crooked cronies.

Pressure has been steadilly mounting to do something about the situation and howard has done stood firm untill now.

It's an election year here and he is under pressure from a newly elected opposition leader to put up or shut up.

howard has done a 160 degree turn on Hick's situation, 180 would be to pressure septics into releasing him.

Blair did it and got his people back.

Poor old Hichsy is a pawn in a political game being played by pollies in both countries.

The feeling here is the charge cant stick, because it's retrogressive.

Political game indeed...

Nasty game however, for the 'suspected' ones.

What do you think, would the Saudis, Egyptians etc, play the same game (for their citizens)...? :o

I have been an advocate for charge or release him for the last 5 years, am really pissed of that howard is now beating his chest claiming he's pressuring the Americans, codswallop he has done jackdiddly over the last 5 years.

He's been quiet because when in close proximity to Bush his lips were otherwise engaged. :o

<deleted> is right! First people whinge because he hasn't been charged and prosecuted. Now people whinge because he has been charged and is going to be prosecuted. Btw, has anyone bothered to actually read the charges levied against Hicks and things he has already freely admitted to in letters to his attorneys?
