Sri Lanka take thrilling win over England

Dilhara Fernando took a wicket with the last ball of the match to seal a dramatic two-run win for Sri Lanka against England in their World Cup Super Eights clash at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.

England, set 236 to win, finished on 233 for eight when Fernando (three for 41) bowled Ravi Bopara, whose career-best 52 off 53 balls so nearly set up an improbable win in only his fifth one-day international.

But Sri Lanka, who'd lost a one-wicket nailbiter to South Africa, held on with the 1996 champions moving a step closer to the semi-finals.

England must now try to revive their ailing bid for a last four spot against world champions Australia here Sunday.

Why are so few people interested in the World Cup this time around?

I don't know. I've tried to creat a bit of interest here, but mainly silence.

The cricket tragic, Mittheimp, hasn't been posting at all, perhaps he's gone to the tournament?

I guess if the English beat the Aussies again on sat night a few will come out of the woodwork. :o:D

A few short months ago the Brits were all full of piss and vinegar with their forecasts of what their team would do to the Aussies at the World Cup,now after a thrashing in the Ashes Series and some pretty ordinary performances said Brits have retreated to the trenches,c,mon out fella,s, its only a game. :o

Bangladesh vs South Africa, Super Eights, Guyana

Ashraful scripts stunning victory

Bangladesh 251 for 8 (Ashraful 87, Nel 5-45) beat South Africa 184 (Gibbs 56*, Razzak 3-56) by 67 runs

Spurred on by a delightful 87 from Mohammad Ashraful, Bangladesh pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the tournament, thrashing South Africa by 67 runs at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. With 251 on the board, Bangladesh's trio of left-arm spinners thrived on the sluggish surface, one that resembled a sub-continental sandpit during the second half of the match, and pulled off a truly memorable triumph.

This result opens the door slightly for England to make the semis. Previously they were in the position of having to beat Australia tonight to remain in the race, but now can afford to lose this game and still depose the # 1 ranked South Africans for 4th place.

Australia are looking good - but peaking too soon?

The NZ V SA match should be interesting, and offer a good gauge too. I can see SA winning that, only to go out due to an England defeat (off course we'll beat the WI too).

Then it's the Aussies to be sent packing in the semis (they peaked too soon, I tell you!)

Revenge against the SL's in the final will be a great end to a slow starting tournament.

England, still looking good for the title.

If not...

Then, the Australians deserve to be in the final along with the Sri Lankans. Which could make for a good final too. - let's hope.

(It's a bit of a shame that India and Pakistan went out early, and West Indies are not performing. It's been bad thus far from England, mediocre from SA, NZ and Bangladesh. The Sri Lankans have done a tad better. Only really the Aussies stood up so far. - But have they peaked too early???)

I agree with Old Croc and Bronco - England for the World Cup. :o

The Ozzies aren't peaking to soon (they only beat Ireland by nine wickets, it shoulda been a ten wicket victory!)

England has no hope in hel_l.

Sri Lanka are good, but I just have a feeling not this time for them, I have that same feeling for SA (the pressure has made them crack AGAIN!).

NZ is the danger team, a big threat to all other teams in this world cup. They don't have a lot of pressure on them, they weren't expected to win the cup and they are just begining to peak. They are very dangerous and they have some talent and they have the balls to go for it. If NZ played the Ozzies in the final and have to chase a score of 400 or less, NZ have the skill to do it....................

Watch out for the Kiwis!

For England to stay in the world cup they need 2 decent openers to get them off to a good start.Drop vaughn down to no-6 and have bell and collingwood open, pieterson at no-3 and if they can keep flintoff off the grog he finely might get a decent score :o

53 - 3.

I agree with you, but the selectors didn't. A very slow start from the openers, then they get out, leaving an impossible task for the middle order...

On the upside, England did not peak too early.

The final four teams to play in the semis have been decided. The last couple of qualifying games are unlikely to greatly effect the order.

Australia will play South Africa and New Zealand will meet Sri Lanka for a spot in the final.

England will finish fifth or sixth. (They were roundly booed by their own supporters at the conclusion of their weak effort against SA)

The semis are played next Tuesday and Wednesday.
