Embarrassing moments with the wife when traveling to Europe

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

Last year we visited Europe and when flying back home we were at the waiting area ready to board. Off she runs to get a drink and comes back with a hot tea. I told her she should not take that on the plane.  The flight check in lady speaks on the mic that boarding can proceed... and we had a baby and thus were allowed to go on first. The wife accidentally dropped the tea on the floor in front of everyone- right where people had to present their tickets. It was humiliating to say the least.

We just arrived in Germany yesterday. When packing the other night I noticed she put a rice cooker in her bag. I was thinking <deleted>. She said she cant eat german food for 2 weeks (we are in one city hotel for her 2 week course). Control is the opposite of love and thus I let it go. It will be great when the room smells of rice just like back home.

We had a serious incident at the airport in frankfurt. Going thru transit security it was highlight that my wife had 2 sharp metal objects in 2 different bags. (sizzors and a stanley knife) At first someone came over and did a swab and said that her bag tested positive for explosives. Then 4 tall, young and serious policeman come over holding machine guns. I presented documents to show that my wife was attending a medical university course etc. One of them was really angry towards me. Our toddler was a bit scared. For some reason they ended up letting go the explosives issue. One would think that a spec of dust or any such chemical could transfer to a bag at an airport or anywhere at anytime?

1 hour later the boss policeman was making her sign docs. The matter is going to court he says. We dont have to attend but we have to call in a few weeks to check on the results.

He said it was surprising that the thai airport security didnt pick it up. I wish that they had. It was a bit of stress and only just caught the connecting flight. I wonder if this will be picked up on the next shengen visa application?

Its easier for me to travel alone. She now understands why I refuse to bring her parents. Too much baby sitting for me.

cheers

Accidentally dropped a cup of tea in front of everyone..... humiliating to say the least...... you sound like fun to be with.... not. Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect

  • Cut her some slack. She has virtually zero knowledge of what the norms are outside Thailand. Take that into account.

  • very little slack given on TV,  you should know that.  The vultures are perched on their computers

Nothing as fraught as the OP, thank goodness.

Was going through the security check at Edinburgh airport for a flight to LHR. My wife went through and the warning lights came on. The guy at the x-ray arch indicated he wanted my wife to take off her 'coat'. Problem was, it did look like a coat but it was actually a dress, and she was just about to take it off before I managed to stop the show and explained to the guy why it might not be such a good idea. Had a good laugh afterwards as my two boys were also there!!

First trip to UK in mid 80's. Arrived at LHR and was unsure on procedure. So, I went through UK passport lane and the (to be) wife was pointed to the 'others' section, which was busy as ever. So I got through and was all set for a long wait when I noticed an Immo guy gesturing at me to go over to him. My wife had somehow bypassed the queue and was stood in front of the guy, clearly flummoxed by his questions. Anyway, I went over and got it sorted out. Still never found out how she did it....!!

A number of other 'experiences', but I can certainly sympathise with the rice issue. Trying to find a supply of cooked rice at 8am in a wee town in Scotland was not too easy!!

Can't imagine why airport security would get all excited about a rice cooker in someone's carry-on luggage.

Isnt it up to him to explain to her though ?

Explain that you can buy rice cookers in Europe and that theres no need to take one with you

I like the TNT or other explosives instruction. I’ll see what Home-Pro have tomorrow.

We travel back to the UK twice per year... We have a rice cooker at my parents house.

I can understand why.... I can't imagine living in Thailand and not eating some Western food for 2, 3 or 4 weeks. My Wife brings a 'bag of food' which is mostly noodles and sauces etc...

At first I thought this was odd, but, its what my Wife wants and its much cheaper in Thailand than buying it in England.

Now my Wife has her own 'food cupboard' at my parents place in the UK !!!

There are a couple of minor social mores missed by my Wife when traveling internationally - I see it as a little social clumsiness or just a lack of observational skills...

Examples such as when using the Shinkansen in Japan my Wife left her rubbish in a bag (attached to the coat hook), I had to pick the bag up and put it in the bin (copying what the Japanese passengers did) - never any major issues.

My Wife once did me quite proud when our UK flight was heavily delayed (Etihad) and we transferred onto a Thai Airways flight Via Frankfurt.

As we queueing to board, German Immigration were quite assertive, with strong accents I had a little difficulty understanding. A poor Thai woman in front of us couldn't understand their questions and was told to stand aside. Next was my Wife, they saw her passport and asked her to also stand aside. She said, "No, why should I" ? !!!... so they questioned her in the line... "Where did you get your Visa?".... "From the British Embassy Via the VFS of course"... "OK, how long will you be in the UK?"... "26 Days"... "where are you staying?"... "With my Husbands Parents"... "Where are you staying?"... "Oh, you want an address, wait a moment !...  Here.... (and read out my parents address)"....  "How will you get there?".... "Limousine, of course !" (in quite an indignant tone).... "Oh, erm.. OK... Have a nice flight Madam".... I chuckled at their back-pedal as their tone immediately changed with the words 'Limousine'.... (which was actually just a normal car provided by Etihad)...

My Wife handled her own with a rather loud, assertive and almost verbally aggressive German Immigration office who placed pressure on her when questioning - we had a giggle about it afterwards, I was quite proud of the way she handled it.

Maybe it's different generations, but aside from bar girls and such I don't find most Thai girls to be that uneducated or ignorant. They're actually more "westernized" than, say, Japanese girls. Of course the bar girls are a different story, but you wouldn't wanna marry one anyway...

We live out in the Thai countryside where people will live in any old run down wooden building. On taking my wife to the UK I took her to my mothers house. At the side of the house my mother had a rundown wooden garage which needed pulling down as it was that bad. After meeting my mother my wife turned, pointed to the garage, and asked 'who lives there'?   pat.gif

WOW! Lovely type of persons to spend a happy family life. They are educated too!

(not surprising they cant find a woman from their home country)

Yes it can be fun but I guess my wife is boring, one small check in bag for a 2 month trip to the US, no problem eating US food. Yes my wife is boring but she is a thinker she knows the rules of international travel

This could be any person from any country.

The positive reaction on the bag is super easy to fix, throw it away and buy a new one, no need to buy the best quality in the world, most people go for OK quality on discount.

So there's so continuing action re the bag and drug positive, I would be very quickly taking every further action possible to ensure a positive can't happen again in terms of the bag contents, throw them all away.

Sure it's going to cost a bit but better safe than sorry.

So the Thai immigration giving the aliens a hard time is very good and justified. Big Joke should be updated on these educated and developed peoples behaviour.

Disgusting. This entire story reeks of racism, or is it only me who feels that way?

Not true. Once I dated a Thai girl back in my country... relatively rich and on a student visa. Decent enough English. First she asked me to carry all bunch of crap in the suitcase for her family on the way to Thailand. I asked her that if she is on a student visa would she still need to attend school. No problem. I quit visa still valid. Of course, on the way back she gets stopped and I spend night at the airport while she the immigration was drilling her about the school she quit and bunch of crap in the suitcase she brought from Thailand. Fortunately she had an immigration lawyer which bailed her out.

No it's not just you. I'm never ashamed of the woman I'm with (even if I'm paying for her company).

Some of them might not want to be seen with me though.

Another one, beyond belief.

Wealthy respected Australian law professor, multiple doctorates in law, also had given many law lectures at several prestigious Thai universities, also a severe alcoholic had visited Pattaya many times.

On one visit he spotted an expensive house and indicated on the spot (very drunk) that he would buy it. And within a few days the funds were in his bank account from Australia. His Thai lawyer arranged to pick him up the law professor at his expensive hotel the next morning to go to the LTO to effect the land transfer. Alcoholic law professor was also instructed to have the full name and copies of various documents with the Thai name to used on the land chanut.

Thai lawyer arrived at his hotel next morning, eventually convinced the hotel GM to open the guest room door so that he could make him wake up and get dressed. He had an 18 YO up country girl in his bed also asleep (both were dead drunk) and the law professor insisted that she come to the LTO because he wanted her to stay for several more days.

They all go to the LTO, the law professor had a cashiers cheque ready. Then the LTO staff ask for the name to be put on the chanut as the new owner. The drunk law professor in a flash indicates loudly 'put it in her name' then says to the girl loudly 'what's your name again' and he's also asking for a bottle of whiskey.

Bottom line, within an hour the girl has come back to the LTO with some personal documents and the transfer is completed. All attempts by the Thai lawyer to delay the transfer ignored by the law professor.

Within 1 or 2 days all the girls from the bar have moved in, then within a short time the new owners whole family has arrived in Pattaya and moved in and the law professor is back at a hotel.
