What Is Bedlam?

Featured Replies

Bedlam should be for everyone. The posters intent on silly discussion are more than welcome to just kick back and have a laugh, but realize that if there's a serious discussion going on, those partaking in it don't want it being hijacked by silly jokes anymore than moral lectures are welcomed in lighthearted threads.

It's not a matter of old guard wanting to control Bedlam, or the newcomers wanting to take over. It's just the barest sense of basic courtesy. That's not a bedlam thing, it's how internet discussions have been self-governed since the 80s.

Agree with the Vic and the range of comments here. Just read the "Mood Deteriorating" thread in GT. That's a good laugh; IMO, the liberal moralists are taking over that forum.

Cliques? Hijackings? Is it now NOT OK to thank or acknowledge another poster for his/her thoughts, help or laughs? Geez, whenever I did not understand something, even like IMO, I asked and someone explained. Is that hijacking a thread?

I think it is rude NOT to acknowledge a previous poster if you are spouting the same words. Or perhaps the latter poster has placed the initial poster on the ignore list.

And if I like what someone says and I want to give him/her a toaster, is that being cliquey?

And how is "mood deteriorating" Thai-related? Oh...mood on TV?

Bedlam lets everyone spout, and if I do not want to read some threads, then I skip them. That's easy as pie. There is much wit and wisdom here, and I enjoy the twists and parries.

nostalgia and territorial pissings ? :o

:D

yes jet.

In small or large doses, I enjoy the creative, chaotic and witty and input in bedlam. If someone doesnt like this style, no one is forcing them to read it, keeping in mind the definition of Bedlam in the dictionary is some sort of "chaotic madhouse" - or a "free for all".

Bedlam was like this when myself and a good number of other 'newbies' arrived, so I guess we just thought it was normal and part of the Bedlam culture.

this brings us back to the question, what is it? is bedlam really a free for all chaotic madhouse (as the name would suggest) or are there be some house rules specific to the forum that the old guard has not informed us of?

It seems that everybody has their own idea of what Bedlam should be. That means that not everyone will be happy with all posts, all the time. Why don't you just let Bedlam be what YOU want it to be and don't worry about fitting in or what other people think.

I don't know where that came from , im going to have another beer, care to join me?

Thank you for the kind offer, Jeff. I'll have a wine but Grovie might like a beer.

Ya, I never fit in...shuffle shuffle...but can my ideas not be expressed?...and sometimes I get overwound with coils...but not often that I aim for streets that aim for a tedious argument of insidious intent...(thank you TS).

Jeez kids.

What's so difficult in live and let live?

Why subforums et al? Get over the look at me need that's evident in a - thank god - very few posters here. You're simply showing your insecurity.

Just don't hijack threads that any goon can figure should be left as intended. If you can't figure which threads those are, then shutup and growup.

I must agree, Terry loves imposing himself on threads.

Strangely, I have my feet in both camps, maybe I should change my name to 'Draadsitter'.

i think thats a unfair assessement of my self "old red".

i am attracted to a few variety's of threads. mainly ones that are light in nature, humourous or controversial with a biased slant on them.

i never post in political threads or threads involving very serious discussion. they dont interested me.

i think that you are forming your opinion on the bases that when i do get into a thread that interests me, im usually the last one to leave it, and in those threads i have a high profile.

actually, let the truth be known that in the grand sheme of thai visa, i reply to only a few threads but these threads tend to attract the most discussion and that what holds me to it. :o

its better than spitting out one liners and jumping from thread to thread.

its all good "red" dont you think?. :D

cheers

Six of one, half-a-dozen of the other.

It wasn't so long ago there was threads in Badlam claiming how boring it was and requesting it was all merged with Farang Pub.

Membership numbers have increased since then consistantly, along with regular posters meaning a lot more people are hitting that 500 plus mark. The rules in here are "loosely moderated" and that's exactly what it seems to be.

Terry reminds me slightly of Thomas Merton - another self-proclaimed Thai guru who took a lot of flack for his posting style. Nothing much changes really :o

I am a member of the Reverend's flock. May I offer you a testament of what Terry says, Dear Insight?

Bedlam is meant to be a place where moderation is relaxed and the discussion of thing not Thai related is allowed. The idea is that most trouble makers will weed themselves out before they get to 500 posts....at least that is what it seems like I remember someone saying about it.....maybe we should get George to tell us since it is his forum afterall. I think that the name Bedlam is meant with some humor because some of the topics that some people wanted to discuss were sort of crazy...this is evident by simply looking at what is getting posted these days. There have been attempts at having serious discussions and most of these have been frustrated by disruptive posting.....these days the disruption is the caca poopy face stinky breath group hug clique....in previous days it was done by the politicos. Really not much has changed....any serious discussion gets derailed, the only difference is the content of the deraileur.....I think this is why Thomas Merton quit.

By all means...

/edit - Intended for Jet Gorgon

I think I'll say it again before Jet gets her trollies in a twist, it's the madness escaping Bedlam and running amock amongst general topics that first brought this to light, and since it's been brought up it has died down, there you go we can all listen to a complaint and moderate ourselves.

As for the mood deteriorating in General Topics, I think it comes and goes, but there are some senior members who like to trawl the forum and snipe and critisize the newer members and disrupt threads in that way, it's a cheap ego trip for them, but is enough to put off new members and give the impression of 'us and them'. I would add that those few members are hardly ever seen in Bedlam

As for nostalgia, it's not as good as it used to be, nostalgia was much better than it is now. :o
