Us And Thai Passport

Featured Replies

I am planning to go to Switzerland next month for 4 days. I hold 2 passports which are US and Thai. I read that you need a VISA if you are going to use your Thai passport but do not require a visa if you use your US passport. So is this the correct procedure:

Leave BKK showing Thai Passport

Arrive in Switzerland showing US Passport

Leave Switzerland showing US Passport

Arrive in BKK showing Thai Passport

If this is the correct procedure, will the immigration ask me questions such as

"Why I am going to Switzerland if my Thai Passport doesn't have the Visa to go?"

Will I be able to tell them I have 2 Passports? Or are there any other problems that might occur?

Thank you!

I went to switzerland in december last year in a similar manner. As has happened a good 50-60 times now, I was never asked. Immigration don't care. They simply stamp you out in my experience.

The airlines however do care, they'll need to see that you have permission to enter Switzerland in advance, and for you, your US PP will be sufficient for them to issue with a boarding pass.

With your Thai PP and boarding pass, Thai immigration on the way out won't question you a second time, as you wouldn't have gotten that far if the airline hadn't already let you.

Departing to Switzerland

So that means my procedure is correct?

BKK: Check-In with Airlines with THAI Passport

BKK: Immigration showing THAI Passport

Switzerland:Immigration showing US Passport

Departing to BKK

Switzerland: Check-In with airlines with US Passport

Switzerland: Immigration with US Passport

BKK: Immigration with THAI Passport

Is that all correct?

All correct, except:

At checking in Thailand, show BOTH US and Thai passports. US passport shows you have permission to enter Switzerland visa free. Thai passports tell the airline you need a TM departure card. IF they dont' give you one, ask for it.

Ahh.. what's a TM departure card. Is it the normal departure card? Showing Both US and Thai passports is OK? I read somewhere in the Bangkok Post forums that "Only idiots flash around 2 passports" so I got worried. So only change was in when Leaving Bangkok and Checking In with Thai and US, everything else is fine??

it is the normal departure card.

As for the airline, it is fine to show them both passports.

Agree totally with not flashing both passports around otherwise, but for international air travel, it has never been a hassel.

Don't worry, all above is correct with a minor addition.

Be prepared to show at check-In with airlines in Switzerland your Thai-p/port to the airline-staff, as well.

Reason: US-p/port allows you 30 days stay in Thailand without a visa, but you need a ticket out of Thailand within such 30 days.

Since you won't have the ticket, show the Thai passport.

Immigration in Switzerland won't care, just show the US- one.
