Officers inspect Karon Beach following complaints of sun lounge zoning

Officers  inspected Karon Beach after they have received a complaint that beach sun lounges were creeping back and taking more than the 10 percent regulation zoning. The ubiquitous white plastic lounge chairs, that used to cover up vast swathes of Phuket’s popular beaches were all but banned when the NCPO took over government in 2014. Since, 10 percent zones have been permitted on most west coast beaches.

The inspection at Karon Beach yesterday was led by the Chief of Provincial Administration Group Siwat Rawangkun.

The inspection followed complaints in a local LINE App group saying lots of beach sun lounges were seen on Karon Beach and were more than the 10 percent area of the regulations.

Seems like an equal or greater threat than someone living in a seastead 14 miles off shore. Wonder what the punishment will be?

Send in the troops. Tourists are asking for that, what holidaymakers want.

If they were serious they would have done this before the end of the season! Pathetic!

In any case, Karon Beach had empty sunbeds throughout as most Russians, by far the perdominant nationality in the area, prefer to sit on a mat on the sand.

Always all words... a photo op...1day to 1week enforcing the law or ordinance. So predictable.

It's very simple to verify the length of Karon Beach that is covered with chairs. No need for a high-level delegation with military escort and photographers. The current Google Earth image dated a year ago (22 March 2018) shows that there were five zones, each 200 metres long with double rows of chairs coloured red on the attached photo. The whole length of the sand beach is 3.3km. That means 30% of the beach is occupied by chairs. I think the zones are still the same today, maybe longer.
