Troops and police raided a pub in Bangkok’s Thon Buri district overnight on Tuesday and found that 38 of its patrons tested positive to drug abuse.

The 3am raid against the Wave Pub on Ratchadapisek Road in Talad Plu sub-district was led by Colonel Viroj Nongbualan, a deputy chief of the peacekeeping unit of the Bangkok office of the Internal Security Operations Command. The unit was joined by ISOC officials and anti-narcotics police from the Talad Plu police station.

When the authorities stormed inside, they found 440 pub-goers joined in a foam party for a late Songkran celebration.

Of the 38 patrons arrested for drug use, 25 are woman.

No underage drinkers were found inside the pub.

The authorities also found some quantities of drugs, including ketamine and crystal meth, on the pub floor.

Viroj said Rewat Chaiyaphum, 43, deputy manager of the pub, was arrested on a charge of violating closing hour and allowing drugs to be abused inside the place.

Viroj said the pub is now facing a five-year closure for violating closing hours and allowing drug use.

The pub was formerly known as the Poseidon Pub and was closed three years ago on similar charges.

The pub is located on the underground floor of the 15-storey Thon Buri Plaza building. Viroj said officials also checked the third and ninth floors of the building and found many electronic gambling machines for card games and horse racing. They seized several computers used to receive online bets.

Viroj said the Talad Plu police station would summon the building owner, Chana Chaksrimongkol, 58, for interrogation before taking legal action against him.

the world has this issue. People seem to have a low value to their lives. SO they drink, smoke, drugs too much. The consequences are not good. But who cares, right? Same as committing a crime. what are the consequences? If people can get immediate feedback to that question then maybe things will change.

So many questions....

Why raid the club? What was so pressing that this needed to be done

Who cares if the people are doing drugs, so long as they don't hurt others

How and why would the club owner be responsible for people at the club who have drugs in their system

Something else is going on here. We all know their are plenty of clubs in BKK whose patrons act in all sorts of way, selling ones body is illegal, but plenty of people do it anyway and so much more happen, there was some vendetta at play here, something more that the club owner and other people at the top know that we don't know

They raid bars, pubs, and night clubs all over Thailand what is the deal behind that.

Any chance of returning to civilian control any time soon, with troops returned to barracks?

These kind of raids were more fierce during civilian control. But people were able to bribe their way out.

Don't expect it to become more relaxed with a new civilian government.

Army raiding a pub surely must be abit over the top.

Not when the police have obviously been allowing it to continue to operate !

So now it's just straight to interrogation, no interview or questioning... :w00t:

They have been doing the job that the police weren't doing because they are too lazy/incompetent/have been paid off ever since the coup. Sometimes, often, they have had to babysit police on raids to make sure it is done above board.

Or perhaps you condone drug taking. Many do.

I would support you except about 20 people died in road accidents in the province while they were busy carrying out their miilitary operation...

Aim for the low hanging fruit, like all cowards.

To add: If governments here or anywhere for that matter, had the balls to decriminalize drugs, and legalize gambling - both activities millions of responsible adults mange to do quite comfortably - then they would not need to be wasting huge effort to arrest young people out having fun.

But then as they are cowards these are the easy victims for them, just like a dog that chases the cat when you get home - to prove their worth, to the people...

So you are suggesting that the army patrols the roads too, to prevent the carnage that the police allow to happen. You have my vote on that. And that they pose as passengers for taxis and arrest every driver who turns down a fare/refuses to use the meter/drives dangerously, all things the police don't bother doing as they get paid anyway. Thailand does not have an effective police force, so let the army do the job. What else do they have to do anyway?

I'm not saying too, I am saying instead. The road carnage is almost certainly at national emergency level, while last I checked, partying was not actually harming many at all?
