Video: Forget the police - Thai man appeals to social media to track down driver who damaged his pick-up

A Thai driver is not bothering to report damage to his pick-up parked outside his home in Pathum Thani north of Bangkok.

Instead of going to the police he posted a CCTV video of the person who caused the damage and asked netizens to find him.

Wichian Thonghor, 59, says he hopes that the man will be shamed into coming to him to pay for the damage.

His Ford Ranger was hit in the front by a Toyota pick-up in the early night hours of Friday morning.

The Toyota can be seen colliding with the other vehicle before backing up and fleeing the scene.

He said he can forgive - and it'll be cheaper for both of them not to bother going through the cops.

It appears that the miscreant may be a neighbor or a friend of a neighbor.

However, he told Daily News that if his online appeal failed he will go to the police after all.

In the Past 20 years my Parents have encountered a Car stollen from inside our locked garage and had Jewelry stollen in a burglary.

On both (separate) occasions the Police came, took statements, took fingerprints and photos.

On both occasions they had an 'idea' of who it was but without direct evidence identifying said suspects they were powerless to approach them without 'reasonable cause' (or something to that effect).

The Police in the UK are forced to work with their hands tied behind their backs, criminals can hide behind protection and various 'rights' assigned to citizens.

In Thailand, citizens aren't afforded those same rights yet the BiB here are equally as ineffective.

Neither system protects its citizens very well against minor crime - one of the great benefits of Social Media is that we are now able to do some of the leg work ourselves.

Unless the runner himself comes forward how is anyone going to help based on these videos?  Small chance I'm thinking although the damage to the drivers side front quarter might give it away.  We'll never know of course.

I hope it happens but I'm betting against it.

Why not do both at the same time?

Gosh what an innovative thought.  :ermm:
