Bangkok woman, 70, dies while picking bananas

A 70-year-old woman died of a broken neck when she fell from a ladder while she was picking bananas in her garden in Bangkok’s Klong Samwa district on Thursday.

 

 

The Nimit Mai police found the body of Sri Khamloi on Soi Nimit Mai 41 in Samwa Tawan Ok sub-district lying under the tree.

 

The tree was about five-metres tall and a ladder leaning on it.

 

Her daughter, Thassanee Salee, 45, told police that her mother often picked bananas from the garden on her own.

What a strange way to 'pick' bananas. Cut a nice deep Vee just about half way through the trunk 3 foot off the ground and encourage the tree to topple forward. Poor woman needed some better advice on how to go about it. So sad she didn't know.

She was probably picking one ''hand'' not the entire bunch. They keep better that way.

The solution isn't rocket science.  This one's fancy.  The ones we use in the villages are simply a blade attached to a bamboo pole.  Good for old folk who probably should refrain from climbing ladders.

The banana plantain will fruit only once so the easiest way to get a bunch down is, as previously mentioned, hack a 'Vee' cut at the base of the plant and let it fall down in a controlled manner to a level where the bunch can be separated.

And also stopping regrowth of the plant, which is why they are left hanging over. Cut it off clean and it uselessly resprouts.

Died doing something she probably enjoyed. Broken neck ... fast and painless. RIP dear elderly lady. Dying in your garden a nice way to go.
