Behave! Rude Thais told to use the escalator and not the handicapped lift

A picture shared widely online showed a person in a wheelchair being left behind as able bodied Thais crowded into a lift at a Bangkok station. 

 

Wan Tulyana went on Facebook to slam her compatriots saying: "Don't do this! That station has up and down escalators - use those".

 

Twitter user @pondvs97kg said it was "sad" to see.

Wan you are wasting your time, you ask others to use escalators and not the lift.

Most people here dont give a s++t about disabled, if you are disabled many consider you to be a 2nd class person, who should hide away at home.

Invariably the people using these are young able-bodied women, "weighed down" with handbags.  They are just too lazy and selfish to use escalators. When I had a wheelchair-bound friend staying with me, I had no compunction about pushing these oafs out of the way. Quite happy to return the dirty looks I got.

Unfortunately, its the me, me, me part of Thainess. Whilst of course not all Thais this is more typical of Thais behaviour in Bangkok. Letting doors close in peoples faces is another one. Apart from driving habits I find that over the years people tend to be far more considerate to their fellow man in the Thai countryside than in Bangkok. Mix lack of being taught good manners together with the attitude of "we must be better as we have more money", Bangkokians generally have, then this manifests itself into this news item.

 

How very refreshing to know that Wan Tulyana  condemned the attitude and how I wish many other Thais would heed her comments.  Makes it a far nicer place to live for both abled bodied and those who unfortunately have disabilities

Yes its rude, but it would be more accurate to call them selfish. Just the same with handicap/family parking lots, always taken by hi so cars.

Missus sent me this picture yesterday. She was fuming. Seems there are also a lot of other Thais angry with this sort of behaviour. 

 

Some people argue, "Is this selfishness or is it just lack of awareness?". My answer is always, "It doesn't matter. Either way both mentalities need a good kick up the arse".

Go to ANY Tesco in the entire country and check out the handicapped  or women with babies parking areas, Ive yet to see  a  Woman with baby or handicapped person in one, because they are  all filled by the other  selfish pr&cks.

The Mrs always insists on using the lifts, sometimes I walk off and use the stairs/escalator and often there before she is. It's bone idleness the same as when they wont use a bridge to cross the road but would rather risk life and limb dodging cars.

It's well established that many Thai folks don't read signs or listen to announcements and have very little knowledge of why things are done in certain ways.

 

They see a lift, they go for it, as simple as that. 

 

They don't say anything about the wheelchair bound person left behind because that would make them stand out in the crowd, highly undesired.

Telling them not to use the elevator, is about as effective as telling them to pull their cars over the side of the road, as an ambulance with a dying person is attempting to pass, to get to the hospital. I am often astonished by how many do not get this, or just do not care. Deterrents are what are needed to get the people to behave.

So agree, Lotus near me has about 10 parking places for those with disabilities along with for some reason places for those with children. . If I want to use Lotus at 8 or 9 pm I still don't park in a reserved space out of habit , it must be a Thai thing to park in a blue bay when perfectly fit and be seen by all going through the doors that you are just too idle to walk further ...rant over.

I am actually surprised, while I saw some able bodied people use the elevator at my bts stations I surely never saw a packed elevator.

And contrary to what other said about "thainess", when I use the elevator at work and at home I never had someone let the door shut on me, it's even funny how they hold the door even if they just see me coming from afar.

As good mate of mine whose in a wheelchair was waiting for a lift in a shopping mall in Bangkok, when the the doors opened the locals rushed in first, he then rammed his way into lift, there was some sore shins!!!!

Airports seem to solve this problem by having their lifts so painfully slow that one would only use them from necessity.

I think it would be difficult to find a security guard, with very little training and paid the daily wage of one groat and half a farthing, that would be willing to advise people that he has been conditioned to believe are his superiors not to do what they do.

Me too mate. Get a lot of women 25-40, usually dressed nicely with designer handbags who seem to ignore my "invisible" son in his wheel chair and just try and cut in-front or push by.
