PHUKET: A new coral restoration project will begin at Maya Bay tomorrow (May 15) according to the chief of Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, Worapoj Lomlim.

The area has been closed to tourists since June 1, 2018, in order to protect the island from environmental damage brought on by over-tourism.

Mr Worapoj today said, “We continue our work to restore the marine environment at Maya Bay and it is showing good signs of improvement. We have a new coral restoration project that will begin tomorrow and will be completed on Monday (May 20).

Why do they need foreign divers for that?

Because foreigners are the only ones who really give a flux....

The locals are only interested in getting the park open again so they can fill their whiskey jars !!!

Maybe, like the cave rescue guys, these divers have experience in coral reef restoration

that perhaps indigenous divers don't yet have.

Maya Bay is only one location out of a few hundred that could need coral restoration. Why not doing some effort in other locations?

Why not be happy that at least something is being done!  There are a millions of places around the world that could use help.   Instead of sitting behind your computer and bitching about not putting "some effort in other places".  Why not congratulate the people that are actually doing something about the problem!  It's Maya Bay,  whatever you think about the place, it needs help and it's better than listening to all these people say "when I was there..." or  "Tourists, speedboats, corruption, Leo....blah, blah, blah"   At least some people are getting off their <deleted> and making a difference, no matter how small it is, or whatever the nationality...  Help be part of the solution!  I want to read about you trying to make a difference!   Why isn't there an article about you changing something?

KUDOS to anyone that cares enough to make a change and try to help!

Because there are far more foreign Dive Masters and Instructors than Thais.  many Thais cannot swim and are not confident in the water.  Then especially to certify as Instructors they need to have very good English skills as (unless it has changed in the last couple of years) the certification agencies do not have materials or testing in Thai. It also costs more than most working class Thais can afford. I know some dive schools have made very big efforts to encourage and train Thai instructors and dive masters including paying all their costs but you still do not come across too many here.
