Trump says Boris Johnson would be 'very good' next PM for Britain

LONDON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump threw his weight behind Boris Johnson's campaign to be Britain's next prime minister and urged all candidates to pledge boost defence spending, in a striking intervention ahead of his state visit next week.

 

"I think Boris would do a very good job. I think he would be excellent," Trump told the Sun newspaper about the former foreign secretary and leading Brexit campaigner, who is one of the front-runners to succeed Theresa May as head of the Conservative Party.

 

Trump arrives in Britain on Monday for a three-day state visit at the invitation of Queen Elizabeth before attending World War Two commemorations in France and visiting Ireland.

 

He told the Sun other Conservative lawmakers have sought his endorsement - though not environment minister Michael Gove, who has criticised his stance on Iran.

 

Trump also praised Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt's pledge to increase British defence spending.

 

"Yup. Like him," Trump said when asked about Hunt. "The UK should be able to defend themselves. It's a great and very special place," he said, noting that higher British defence spending could boost exports of U.S. military equipment.

Hopefully that will put an end to Boris' hopes. What confuses me more than anything is how they are talking of promoting people from a very disliked political party to be PM when they should be having a general election.

With the Conservatives in turmoil, EU election drubbing and leaderless, no chance of that happening.

Trump is hardly qualified to give such an endorsement.

If BJ is successful, Trump will be taking credit for that. And then if BJ does or says something that Trump doesn't approve of, Trump will have a party with the initials "BJ" when he scorns him.

I've been through about 6 of these article posts and read most of the opinions and I see that Trump Derangement Syndrome isn't only in America.  You Brits are a little screwed up right now, are you sure Trump is the problem or is your country the problem?

Wouldn't endorsing/helping a particular candidate gain political office and lead a foreign country be considered something that other countries and leaders should not do?  I'm told the Russians didn't!

The Trump name is known worldwide (in most cases, not positively). Even some of my Thai friends who don't even follow Thai news know who Trump is. Their opinion of him is about the same as most Thaivisa members, barring the five or so who support him (the ones with rose tinted glasses).

it would be better that now that Trump has endorsed BJ if BJ came out right now  and told Trump that he didn't want an endorsement from a sadistic psychopath that has no clue on how to be  the President of the USA and hr hopes that he is voted out in the next election and is served with multiple criminal incictments the day he leaves office.  I think that Bj would fair better than accepting his endorsement.

The answer to that you should know surely.  Trump is a huge problem for the US and a danger to the trading world.  The UK has been a thorn in EUs side for a long time and with the lastest thing from Brexit it is showing to the EU that the 17 million people are creating a large problem for Europe not seen since the 1930's.   Put the two together and it does not look promising.

Exactly what has Brexit got to do with mainland eu's problems..apart from the hard pressed german taxpayer putting more of their money into the brussels atm to feed all the subsidy junkie eu member states in the future.
Why not just blaim Brexit for ALL the world's problems???

No, the Brits are not screwed up about Trump.  From what I understand, Trump is unpopular with the Brits.  Thus, they are not the ones who have a "derangement syndrome."  Thank you, Brits!

 

By the way, my guess is your TDS is not in the latest DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, as published by the American Psychiatric Association).  However, I bet making things up as if they were reality is in there.

Why would 17 million people who want to leave the EU create a large problem for Europe?  After leaving they would no longer be part of Europe, and therefore not Europe's problem.

From all that I have read it is possible the leaving may cause trade, customs and travel problems for UK and Europe, but that has yet to be seen.  And there are surely enough bureaucrats in Brussels eminently qualified to sort out those problems.
