Registering My Marriage In England

Featured Replies

Hi does anyone know where I can submit my marriage certificate in order to be recognised here in England, a website link or telephone number here in England would be useful and would this help us in the visa apllication when we apply and for sons British passport

also any info on registering my sons birth in the uk

I assume that you were married in Thailand? Not that it matters as under the Foreign Marriages Act of 1896 any marriage that is legal in the country where it took place is also legal in the UK.

This means that if you have only had the ceremonial Thai marriage then you are not legally married under Thai law so are not legally married under UK law. However, if you have registered your marriage at an Ampur then it is legal under Thai law and so is also legal under UK law. In which case all you need to do is get a certified translation of your marriage certificate.

This translation is not needed for the Bangkok embassy (there are people there who can read Thai) but will be useful once you are in the UK.

You cannot register your marriage in the UK, as it is already registered in Thailand. What you can do is deposit a copy of your marriage certificate with the General Records Office in London via the embassy (see Recording a Marriage in the UK ).

The benefits of doing so are:-

1) If you were to lose the original certificate whilst in the UK then you could apply to the GRO for a copy instead of the Ampur where you married.

2) Any descendants of yours researching their family history could obtain a copy of your marriage certificate without applying to the Ampur where you married.

3) Err, that's it.

Worth paying the fee for? Up to you, but most don't bother.

Again, I assume you son is in Thailand, in which case see Consular Birth Registration. If he is in the UK then contact your nearest registry office.
