Video: Two students injured in "big bike" smash with 'new' pick-up in south Thailand

3pm_VI.jpg

Caption: Shocking moment!

There was more carnage on the Thai roads at the weekend.

CCTV caught the moment when a "big bike" hit a pick-up that had just been driven out of a "tent" - indicating that it was probably a recent purchase on the second hand market.

The pick-up was in the wrong lane.

The bike collided head on with the pick-up. Both the rider in control of the vehicle and his female passenger suffered severe injuries. They are tech university students in Hat Yai in Thailand's far south.

After the collision the female was run over by another car. She is out of danger.

The male rider is still unconscious and critical in ICU, reported Sanook quoting INN.

The accident happened on the Satjakun Road.

Crap video.????

Plenty more on their way.

This has been done to many times already. Pick-ups in the wrong lane? They have to evolve, and not just act like copy cats.

The pick-up is in the CORRECT lane on a dual carriage way. The MC is in the WRONG lane as he crosses the central res followed by about 5 other MC's. Am I correct in what I see?

Watch the video until the end and then pause it when they show the close-up. The road actually seems to work like that, there seems to be a motorcycle lane that goes in the opposite direction. Note the blue and yellow lines. And also the motorcycle drawing on the asphalt indicating that this is the right way for them to go. It's a totally insane road design but it is what it is...

It looks misleading on the video and at first I thought that, but before jumping to the conclusion I watched the video again.

The Motorcycles were heading in the correct direction of a designated (in blue) motorcycle lane.

To the right of the motorcycle is the 'car' lane.

The pickup was heading in the wrong direction.

The pickup 'should' have been on the left side of the fixed white line.

In the same direction that the pickup was traveling there is also a designated (in blue) motorcycle lane, but there are vehicles parked in it.

What we also see on the right right  of the video is a 'frontage road' which gives the casual viewer the impression that this is a divided dual carriageway - its not.

The road lay out is not 100% clear and as with many accidents in Thailand, poor road design (and engineering) can be blamed as a contributing factor towards an accident.

At the end of the day it will be pure luck if either bike rider or pickup driver has

1 a licence

2 insurance

3 know ANY road rules

If, on the roads of Thailand, you do not make physical separations and leave only paint of the color of your choice on the road, it will unfortunately serve strictly nothing;
On most roads there is often a double continuous yellow line, it does not prevent any motorist to overtake the vehicle in front of him.

It can be said that 99.9% of Thais have never been taken to an auto driving school;
they do not know what is the use of the lines painted on the road;
they also do not know what are braking and stopping distances, on dry or wet roads;
it's raining, it's dark, there's a lot of wind, they'll never reduce their speed and most of them do not know where their brake pedal is.

According to several Thai drivers i have spoken to there is no 'wrong lane', as in many places they don't understand the road markings, so they just go where they want to !

Stop the video at 00:15 and view on the big screen. The lane the MC's were in is a 'Bicycle Lane' with the painting of a bicycle in it.

It was not a dedicated MC lane. It was a designated bicycle lane. See post above.

Yes, it's a bicyle lane so not a motorbike one ;

but...but the road is shut on the opposite line for motorbikes, so they must go on this bicycle lane where I will never go with my MBT if I was there ...

it's better to get off the bike and walk next to it if you have to go through a work zone rather than drive in front of the risk of eating a pickup truck in an area where it is not allowed to drive.

Motorbike was going fast,i see these idiots everyday at my local bar here in Wichianburi,hammering down the main street at 90 kmh,how more are not killed amazes me,i am in a car and go no more then 30/40 khm until i am out of town,you just never know what is going to pull out on you ,generally without looking first.

Agree,my ex wife brought her licence from some guy she knows in the motor office,before we seperated she drove us up to Phetchabun,the nearest big city,she went through 2 red lights,that had not just changed and nearly took out a motorsai by turning left at the last second,with no indicator,it was terryifying,i insisted i drove back,the car has been in the toyota repair centre about 8 times,she just laughs and said'free insurance' yes my dear but it won't be free next year and the premium will probably have doubled,and she ain't getting 30,000 a month from me anymore,oh the stupidity make's me so glad i got rid of her.

New girl took driving lessons,and is an excellent,and dilligent driver.

Uh Huh!  YEP!!  Here we go again!!!  What a beauty!  Just keep it up Thailand, your doing an excellent job at culling the population and taking anyone and everyone with ya!  Thai roads=DEATH

No one was driving the wrong way.

The pick-up was in the wrong lane.

The motorcycles were in the correct lane marked for them specifically.

You're not Thai by any chance are you? It would explain your post.

How come the pick-up was in the 'wrong lane' when in your first sentence 'No one was driving the wrong way'?   dtroll.jpg

You can be in the wrong lane and still drive the right way (direction).

But hotchilli is also wrong because the pickup was indeed driving the wrong way.

I see TV posters also have plenty trouble with this situation ????

Watch the video again, especially the end. Then read all comments in this thread.

No it is not a MC lane. A blue lane in Thailand is for bicycles only.

In Thailand a road that is painted blue is a cycle lane. End of.
Bi-cycle or motor-cycle or both ?
