Future Forward spokeswoman advised to read more before making public comments

 

 

An economics professor at Chulalongkorn University has rebuked Future Forward spokeswoman Pannika “Chor” Wanich and advised her to equip herself with knowledge before making public comments “just for the sake of occupying media space.”

 

“There is nothing wrong with not knowing but, as an MP and public figure, not knowing through failing to seek the information and then expressing opinions in an irresponsible manner is wrong,” wrote Assistant Professor Piti Srisangnam of the Faculty of Economics, Chulalongkorn University, in his Facebook post today in response to Ms. Chor’s criticism of the 34th ASEAN Summit in Bangkok last weekend.

 

The controversial spokeswoman raised several questions related to the summit, such as why did Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha give a news conference after the summit in Thai and did not provide an interpreter for members of the foreign media?  Why did the Thai government choose Plaza Athenee as the venue for the summit rather than other five-star hotels or the Foreign Ministry?  Was there something special between the Prime Minister and the proprietor of the hotel?  Why were recycled paper chairs used at the summit, which will generate more garbage, when the hotel has enough chairs made of other materials?

 

Assistant Professor Piti suggested Ms. Pannika learns more about “green meeting” venues which, he said, must comprise the following elements; green catering, green arrangements, green documents and low carbon footprint. Plaza Athenee, like the other hotels, is regarded as a green venue.

 

As for green arrangements, Piti explained that there are no hotels in Bangkok which have thousands of chairs for the summit participants and many trucks would have been used to bring the chairs to the meeting venue. This time, pulp paper chairs, which are light and reusable, were appropriate.

 

All the information about the “green meeting” venue was available in a documentary released via YouTube, said Piti, adding he wondered if Ms. Pannika had seen it.

 

He also advised Future Forward party leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit to read a book on ASEAN’s 50th anniversary before talking about the group’s principle of non-interference in the affairs of member countries.

Green meeting? They are not fooling anybody.

Green catering ? Maybe the Professor should read more himself - Did we not just read a report that 41% of the Thai fruits and vegetables where tested and contaminated with chemicals well above internationally allowed levels and even banned chemicals where detected on them? What’s green about that?

And to have a “green” meeting in a city like Bangkok?

The place is one big smelling, stinking dump. An environmental disaster!

And she is absolutely right to ask why the meeting was held at this hotel owned by a junta backer - I am sure nobody will ask how much it has costs the tax payer!

I like FFW but if a spokes person does not even watch the video explain it all then she deserves all she gets and that goes for anyone who does not do their homework before commenting.

What is irresponsible about asking questions in order to find answers to something you do not understand?

 

I encourage my students to use this strategy to increase their knowledge, understanding and grasp of a problem they are engaged in solving.

Yes but if your students don't read the book about the whole thing that is available (book = video in this case) and then start asking questions without having done their own research dont you think that is stupid ?

I hope the professor is not taking her comment out of context and I look forward to Pannika’s rebuttal. 

 

All told, people should be allowed to have opinion and freedom of expression guaranteed in the constitution. As a young party, FFP has been a refreshing change from the old sakdina style of patronage and obedience politics. Even Thanatorn’s stab at the old culture of 50 years non interference Asean is bold and fresh in this times.

But if the questions asked are already explained in the book (the one they did not read but was available to them ?). That is my point, there was a video available explaining all of it and it was not even watched.

 

The least I would have done is watched it so I could comment on it if I was a spokes person. I feel its an oversight. Bad thing for a spokesperson not professional. Asking questions is a good thing but not if you havent done your homework before.

Children and adults should ask questions. 

 

The whole basis of education is based upon questioning. 

 

How do you know what to look for if you don’t know what your question is?

 

And if there is someone who can answer them, then ask them. 

 

Primary sources are better than secondary ones.

The article does not offer any information as to whether Panika watched the video or not, it just states "he wondered if Ms. Pannika had seen it" - you just assume that because she is anti-junta she must be in the wrong and because the fat dude is defending the junta, he is right.

Indeed. 

 

But questions asked after reading / watching available information sources tend to be better.

 

Maybe this lady watched the video and did some research. Maybe she is just firing off questions.

 

She and her party are new. We'll see their substance and competence over time.
