The Fifth Amendment gives an individual the right to withhold information that might incriminate them-self. A pardon removes the possibility of criminal charges and hence negates the Fifth Amendment Rights. So handing out a pardon removes the right to withhold evidence. The courts may then hold an individual who has been pardoned in contempt if they withhold testimony/evidence. The contempt is backed by limitless(?) fines and possible serial detentions until compliance is surrendered. Chelsea Manning, currently before the Grand Jury but refusing to cooperate, is an example of the process.
