Awesome headline: From sinister to minister: politician's drug trafficking jail time revealed

He's a busy beaver...unusually wealthy as well. Who woulda thunk? Hot second wife as well, the ubiquitous "beauty pageant winner".

Deported after serving 12 months or more usually, he served 8 months

Is it served 12 months or sentenced to 12.

Now a report about it in the Bangkok post too how this guy lied. I wonder if the nation will pick the article up too and I wonder if anything will be done.. probably not of course he is of the party in power at the moment.

This quote explains it all:

When questioned by reporters today, agriculture assistant minister Thammanat Prompao said he has no response to the claim, which was made in detail by the Australian newspapers Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.

“I’ve read the news, but I’d like to refrain from giving any explanation today,” Thammanat said. “And I won’t give a response, because they don’t understand the system [sic].”

He's getting roasted on Thai social media, but lesser men have weathered worse storms here.

Makes one wonder what Surachate Hakparn must have done to get drummed out, but left breathing?

There's just something really creepy about that guy. I can't put my finger it, but just looking at that picture of him gives me a sense of no trust whatsoever. It sounds like he's got and has had dirty little fingers stuck in many questionable pies.

ADDED:  I was just reading how the Sydney Morning Herald dug up the info, confirming his 4-year sentence for his part in a 3+ kg heroin smuggling operation. What the minister says is BS, and kudos to the SMH for doing good research to unravel the chain of name changes this creepy man went through in an attempt to cover his heinous criminal past. He has likely done a significant part in hooking many young people on heroin, and now he seems to be a key position in the current Thai gov't. Thailand regularly amazing me. I just wish it as for positive things.

Nothing 'alleged' about it. He did 4 years in an Aussie pokey.

I take it he must be banned from travel to a number of countries as well, despite changing his name on several occasions.

Says a lot about a gov't that doesn't consider the actions of a Thai citizen to be of concern as they happened in another country. I guess it is all just a 'misunderstanding'.

This should open a can of works. It's clear that this man wasn't vetted (properly or at all) before promoting him to such a lofty position in the gov't. Now the question has to be asked of how many other members of the Thai gov't have disqualifying behavior and criminal convictions behind them, but as it's now clear that no real background checks have been conducted, who knows what kinds of people are involved in running the country.

The Thai gov't should have easily been able to see his record of name changes and questioned it to the point of discovery that he's a convicted heroin smuggler who has likely done his part in destroying people's lives. A foreign newspaper was able to expose him, despite his series of sneaky name changes, and that has got to be MUCH more difficult to do than it would be for Thai gov't officials with their unhindered access to all records.

This should be a HUGE embarrassment for the Prayut gov't, but it will likely just be swept under the carpet and a gag order put in place, disallowing any further discussion of the matter.

8 months jail is little more than not reporting a drug deal. IN Oz you can walk free if you get done with a car load of drugs if its your first offence.

I am guessing he was a conspirator to a major drug importation or some ring but refused to testify against his buddies.

He is lying through his teeth - he was in prison more than 4 years and was then deported.
The article today in the Australian press was a real eye opener.
He is a convicted criminal - there are no allegations only facts.

the PM exactly knew everything but chose to ignore it. Because crime wasn't done in thailand and because he wasn't sentenced here he had the right to be minister

Thailand desperately needs real journalists like the two Aussies who have exposed this creep. Well done Michael Ruffles and Michael Evans.

Why was no Thai news agency or journalist able to do the job? (rehetorical question).

Yes, I read in the BKP this morning that Australia were contradicting statements made by the minister. Gee, with a record like he could become a valued MP, Ha!

now pravit comes in his defence, saying, that as a former convict he has the right to go straight and to serve the government

Cannot believe I have just seen this story. This should be worldwide news.

A convicted drug smuggler and his government goons trying to brush such a huge story under the carpet.

I really hope the Thai media don't leave this alone.

I guess yes he is a convicted smuggler into Australia, yes he is a deportee from Australia

Has he committed any crimes in Thailand for which he has been tried and convicted?

Is he in breach of the Thai constitution by standing for election?

When is a person rehabilitated?

Just asking. being devils advocate

The irony being that had your average Som Chai been caught trying to smuggle heroin out of Thailand in the early 90s they'd have been executed.

Even if he was completely reformed and rehabilitated, it wouldn't matter. He's been caught lying to the public about what really happened. That alone should be instant dismissal and loss of all benefits.

Personally, I would say an international conviction for drug smuggling is a major offence that should impact your future career path.

I can't do my job with any form of a conviction and complete an international police clearance, yet this man can do four years in prison, change his name and become a government minister ????

Agree. He's been involved in a conspiracy to export large quantities of drug and did not get any trouble in Thailand. Surprising, isn't it?

In Thailand his guilt, of which there is now no doubt following the Australian press disclosure disclosure, would be a capital offense possibly involving the death penalty.

Your questions are essentially irrelevant though your comment about rehabilitation was good for a laugh. The only question for the PM is whether this criminal should be a part of his government.
