It’s not how Cabinet looks; it’s how Prayut formed it

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha may have taken one step closer to the brink with the Cabinet he has set up. But it’s not quite about the “faces”, which are a mixture of quality and questionable figures. How he formed it matters more, when his pledge to “reform” Thai politics is concerned.

The way he shaped up his Cabinet is unhealthily traditional. By that, controversial characters made their ways to high government posts because either Prayut had to return the favor or they are party executives who conventionally couldn’t miss out and who couldn’t afford to let less senior party members do a job that the latter group is probably more qualified for.

That’s why Thailand has had Anupong Paochinda as interior minister and Prawit Wongsuwan as deputy prime minister. The two names have been more or less criticized and a lot of people must be asking why they have to be there. What is obvious is they are more essential to Prayut than they are to the public.

I'm quite sure most Thais realize "how" and "why" Prayut formed the government this way.

But they also realize that there is little that they can do about it.

But change will require an exercise in patience.

Some will be proactive in hastening change.

Time will tell.

Is this him thanking you personally Steven, or just him thanking his cronies for giving him more time at the trough?

It almost looks to me as though Steven was physically present on this occasion and was rewarded with a wai - ha ha ha! (Just kidding, folks!).

I've said it before, Steven, and I'll say it again: Prayut really should honour you with a prize or medal. You are clearly his most loyal and devoted Western supporter!

Yes, he's even giving minister positions to criminals. How very magnanimous.

They will all get their new medal now they're in - - - Incidentally - I just read it is ok to be a minister even if you have a crim record.  I guess that's necessary or there would probably be no qualifiers!

It's OK to be a minister if you have a criminal record - but you just trying to be spotless and humanitarian Thanathorn, and you won't even be allowed to be an MP!

We should all remember, however,  that (according to junta circles) Thanathorn is the Devil's sporn. Never was such a wicked guy - filled from tip to toe with undiluted evil - ever birthed upon this hard-done-by planet. No one comes close to Thanathorn's viciousness, thuggery, violence, seditiousness and all-round infernality  - except, of course, Thaksin!

He, and only he has the power to do what he wants!
The military regime is still in full power, and at the moment it is not possible to predict the end of this totalitarian regime!
The General has done his homework well!

Yes (to the above). And we needn't look forward to the next 'election' for a restoration of fairness, democracy and justice: the next election will be even more (if possible) rigged and manipulated than the last one! The junta have learned their lesson. They will NOT relinquish the reins of power. Those reins will have to be prized away from their death-grip hands.

It is up to the Thais to decide how to release that grip (or not, as is their choice ...).

How you can even like this guy one little bit is cause for alarm.

If he doesn't surround himself with first layer of junta people, then he would have serious management problems. But it is sickening.
