Are there any American out there with children who are

american citizens under 17 having problems getting the Child tax credit in 2017, 2018 tax years. Or any years

I am....Maybe 2 yrs ago I was told I couldn't because I was working away from Thailand too much. Accountant says father must be in Thailand 6 mos a year to qualify. For 2019 I'm making Thailand my official residence by getting a retirement visa in LA. Not being officially married is also going against me. Waiting till I sign pension papers before I make it official.

My tax lady says only kids living in US, Mexico or Canada makes it easier for father working overseas to claim. Thinking about using TURBO tax as that system may not ask as many questions.

If you have a child under 17 who is an American Citizen and you make under a certain amount of money say married under $110,000 it is larger in 2019 it does not matter where you live. There is no substantial presence test if your child is an American citizen. If she lives with you, if under 17,is a US citizen  (via Consulate Birth Certificate or born in US. she gets the credit. Its now $2000 in 2016. See IRS 8862 and also American Citizens working abroad. Im retired on pension. I get credit. Your account is wrong. Though I do not know who you work for but it is doable.

Buy Turbo tax and do it yourself. I used to get the child tax credit.

Also, do yourself a BIG favor, get married, get your wife a taxpayer ID number, start filing joint and cut your tax burden in half..
