Overcharged' England fans launch legal action

Thursday, March 15, 2007, Metro.co.uk

Football fans who bought an England or Manchester United football shirt during 2000 and 2001 could be entitled to compensation after consumer group Which? launched legal action against JJB Sports.

Which? Believe football fans who bought a shirt during this period were overcharged.

It is the first organisation to sue a firm on behalf of a group of consumers under the Enterprise Act 2002.

JJB Sports was one of a group of companies fined by the Office of Fair Trading in 2003 over football shirt price fixing.

The sportswear chain was ordered to pay a £6.7m fine.

Which? has issued proceedings against JJB Sports in the Competition Appeal Tribunal in a bid to get compensation for customers.

It is calling for shoppers who bought the relevant shirts during 2000 and 2001 to register a claim on its website.

The consumer group's online editor Malcolm Coles said: 'This case is as much about justice and fairness as anything else. We want to teach companies that rip off their customers a lesson - Which? has new legal powers and we will come after you.'

A case management conference will be held by the Competition Appeals Tribunal to decide how the case will proceed.

A spokeswoman for JJB Sports said it was not appropriate to comment at this stage.

Anyone who bough a shirt during this period may be entitled to compensation, even if they no longer own a receipt.

I reccolect being asked by girls here to bring back football shirts from England.

I had a gig in England so I went shopping.

I concluded that over 40GBP for the quality offered was a total ripoff.

When I went back to France I purchased copies of better quality in a

street market for less than a quarter of the price.
