Using an excuse that the intelligence was old is simply an admission that the US military is not quite as intelligent as they represent it to be. I actually find it quite extraordinary that this information was allowed to surface, considering the extreme levels of censorship that the Trump Administration has engaged in. Just another war crime by the Don. Telling children doesn't really mean that much to him, as he's a pathological super freak. And Hegseth might even enjoy it. He is that depraved. America has indeed fallen upon very hard times, it's credibility, it's influence, and any level of moral authority it once had, has been thrown under the bus by a deep cancer that has overtaken American society.
