No deal? so what...August 31leaving date..make it July 5....get shut of the whole mess   Ireland? let them battle it out, last one standing wins...but keep news of it scant, hardly anybody interested   just 2 minute briefing as to days events there.  get the United Nations involved, just get shut,..this is what Brexit is about, getting shut

Any future US-UK trade deal would almost certainly be blocked by the US Congress if Brexit affects the Irish border and jeopardises peace in Northern Ireland, congressional leaders and diplomats have warned.

I haven't heard any of the Brexiters respond to this tiny obstacle, yet.

Oddly enough, politicians grandstanding in public isn't actually the same as what goes on behind closed doors. Why should they disclose their strategies just to satisfy your curiosity?

When push comes to shove, I don't see that happening. They'll fold, a new trade agreement between US and UK won't be stopped due to the backstop. UK though will have to give in everything, since they have nothing to offer.

That's your answer? They're just grandstanding? Because secretly everybody loves Brexit? In fact, the Irish American vote is huge and politically very powerful in the USA. What's more, nowadays, they tend to vote Republican.

I take it that was a slip of the tongue and you meant "due to the backstop being removed".

Congress do not have a problem with the backstop which is supposed to protect an open border. Where they see the problem is in a no deal situation where the border may come under threat. Whether they would fold or not is another matter.

Johnson’s rise to power, and his demand for the EU to drop the backstop, which is intended to safeguard the open border after Brexit, has galvanised determination in Congress to make a stand in defence of the landmark accord, to which the US is guarantor.

“The American dimension to the Good Friday agreement is indispensable,” said Richard Neal, who is co-chair of the 54-strong Friends of Ireland caucus in Congress, and also chairs the powerful House ways and means committee, with the power to hold up a trade deal indefinitely.

Backstop or not, won't matter to a trade agreement with the US. Congress will in the end fold, money over principles.

You may be right in the end, who knows, but how long could the end take. The US can hardly be seen as a bystander in the brexit debate.

People shouldn't be so quick to dismiss emotions in, or over, Ireland so easily, different rationale altogether, you only have to look at the issue of the Queen's portrait.

"Brexit will have significant consequences for the island of Ireland,"Congressman Boyle said.

"The border is in danger of, once again, becoming a significant barrier, physically and psychologically, to harmonious relationships that have been delicately fostered over the past few decades."
