Hi there

Anybody with some recommendation for a reasonable/affordable Thai health-insurance for a 40 year old Thai woman.

What would adequate coverage be? What company / presently with Thai life on a low-end policy?

Where to start looking and getting correct info? After a recent health-scare which thank God turned out to be

benign, an overview is now urgent matter.

Do these insurers cover private hospitals as well as public-ones. I understand often a top-tier public hospital can do

as good as a private one.....

Any information very much appreciated.

Regards  & Thank you.

Do not understand why?  Public hospitals should be free of charge for a Thai.  There is no need for insurance unless they want private hospital care (which as you mention is often no better and in some cases worse).  Perhaps she has not registered herself on a local home register so hospital she is registered at is elsewhere?

As above. Thsis have access to free health care. Hence very very few take out private insurance for which reason the local insurance market is limited and expensive.

Rather than pay for private insurance better approach woukd be to chsnge tabian ban registration if necessary so that she is covered at a better hospital.

Thank you very much.

But what happens with some serious illness, like cancer that requires extended and often extremely expensive treatment?

Where would she start in Pattaya? Banglamung? Would it help having some TH insurance, even if just 1 or 2 Mio Baht?

A recent scare, with your help & advise, thank you Sheryl, turned out to be benign, but raised the alarm flags to red. Just trust the TH system

and wait what would happen. Anything she can contribute? The recent surgery was paid in full by her basic surgery in BKK Hospital Group

at a very fair rate and very well handled.

What are considered best TH Public Hospitals and would it go through a local one first?

Thank you for any feedback from people with personal experience.   MS>

Care is provided first at your local facility or hospital that you are registered at but if beyond their ability there would be transfer to a higher level or specialized hospital.  People do survive with cancer in government hospitals.  A family member has been in Chula (one of largest government hospitals) for several months after latest lung cancer op and will likely not leave (not due to quality of care - already survived longer than expected).

The issue with local insurance is that it is a very small pool of customers due free medical availability in a decreasing population of those in their healthy years and every effort is often made to limit or not pay citing pre conditions.  Unfortunately this affects those that actually need the coverage much more than the more wealthy.

Cancer treatment is provided through the Thai public health system. In fact there are specialized government cancer hospitals including one in Chonburi town.

There is no cap in the government health coverage. There is in private insurance and 1-2 million cover will not go far at all. Even 3-5 million might not suffice in case of cancer treatment. And some privste policies limit coverage for chronic conditions like kidney failure (not all, but some. ).

As poster above explained care has to he initiated at the government hospital which covers the location where the person is listed in a tabian ban. That might be a community hospital, a provincial hospital or a regional hospital depending on where they live. That hospital will in turn refer to specialized or higher level facilities when and as necessary.

A common problem is that many Thais luve in a different province than where they are listed in a tabian ban and don't bother to chsnge their lusting when they move.

Find out which hodpital covers the area where you ouve. And find out whether your pattner is listed in tabian ban here or still in a home province.

Thank you kindly Sheryl.

Yeah, we checked private insurers and they just are too costly. She will probably keep her 1 Mio. insurance she has had for many years

and used a couple of times with no issues. Cost 19'000/yr.

And worst case go into Gov. system. Yeah, had friends being treated well in Chonburi.

Thank you again.   MS>
