PHUKET: An ongoing mass beach clean-up underway along Phuket’s west coast is expected to collect literally a ton of garbage and debris dumped on the beaches by the recent heavy weather, the chief of Phuket’s Sirinath National Park has revealed.

The mass clean-up was organised in response to the deluge of waste washed ashore by the strong wind and waves over the past week, Park Chief Natthawat Nuisriram told The Phuket News.

“Lots of trash has been picked up along the west coast of Phuket since the cleanup began on Saturday (Aug 3),” Chief Natthawat said.

Are there still enough westerners in Phuket to clean all this?

Only a 1000 kgs?

Seems a gross underestimate to me.

Travel agencies all over the world are now promoting Phuket - the tropical dream of picking garbage during holiday.

Special benefit: won't get arrested for volunteering without the proper visa.

Er, that is on a daily basis I would think.

Beautiful and exotic, just the thing that lures the Nordics back in.

Seems the equivalent of using a bandage to patch up an amputated limb.  Too little, quite likely too late.

Billions of bahts in tourism related tax revenues collected in Phuket each year, yet they cannot afford to hire one or two full-time Myanmar workers for each west coast beach to clean the rubbish and cigarette butts daily?

TAT could promote Thailand as the hub of Trash Heroes. Millions of Nordic tourists can experience a 'feel good' holiday by collecting rubbish and put picture on the Instagram or Facebook accounts. Booming business, so better not pick it up now.

Successful businesses maintain the product, provide a service that is competitve with the market and have a sound strategy for sustaining customers and attracting new ones. Sadly, much of this is replaced by environmental neglect, greed, corruption and short sightenedness.

The source is not being addressed. The long term solution is in proper disposal and recycling.Sadly often the hardest thing to find is a trash bin. Provincal government must take the lead enforcement and solutions.

Seems the solution is more Chinese and Indian visa free tourists.
