I apologize for confusion. I thought Pajero Sport only available at 3.0 and 3.2 engine but appearantly there are 2.4 engine too. But yes, those twos are the models to compare for efficency and forgive me as i have zero knowledge when it comes to automobile. I can drive safely but i dont even know how to replace the battery.

So you're saying 2012 models are quite diesel-inefficient?

Many models of car are listed here. You can go through them for details. Many old cars are also listed.

  • Too many variables to make an accurate assessment..... My fil has a Hilux diesel truck 3.0 m/t + A Toyota sedan that probably has about a 2.0 gas engine - trans = not sure..... He's proud ab

  • Have a Civic Turbo 1.5 which has more power than the old 2.4 Accord/CRV motor, it has averaged 15.2 km per ltr over 18,000 km

Most of the older cars were very inefficient due to them only having 4 speed gearboxes. Things have improved considerably over the years with the new ones now mostly having 6 speed or even more boxes. There has also been a vast improvement in Engine technology.

I did try and point out that my old 3lt Fortuner used around 12lt+ for every 100km. That had a 4 speed Auto gearbox. New one will do better than half that. At around 6.1/2 for every 100km. New one has a 6 speed Auto gearbox. Also has improvements with engine.

These quotes are on runs at speeds of 110kph using cruse control normally 3/4 up with luggage. Quite a lot more in say BKK with its hoards of traffic. Or you drive crazy. The best I have ever obtained was 5.8lt =100km but that was doing a steady 95kph in C/C on flat road with just me in the car.

Don't know if you'll get it but you should. Old one used to do a speed of 80kph at 1.500rpm in top gear. New 2.8lt one at 1.500rpm will be doing 104kph. Thus using a lot less fuel on a run in the process.

Hope this helps.

Car makers have improved fuel efficiency for both petrol and diesel over time.  The big advances in recent years have been in improved common rail (diesel), direct injection (petrol) fuel systems, improvements in turbocharging, higher gearing in 5 then 6 and now 7, 8 or 10 speed auto trans.  These improvements have reduced the gap between between diesel and petrol vehicles and generally make most current models more efficient than their 2012 predecessor.

For the time, the 2012 Pajero GT 2.5L diesel power and efficiency was competitive and it had a 5 speed auto which helped fuel consumption.  I think the Innova was stuck with a 4 speed auto around this era (Toyota were slowly changing from 4 speed to 5 speed autos).  If so, this would increase petrol consumption.

In general, the diesels are more efficient than the petrol engines, but the Pajero / Fortuner are around 2t empty weight while the Innova and the car based SUV's like CR-V are around 1.6t.  The weight difference reduces the efficiency benefit.
