Is the section on dermatologist s updated in the Recommended list above? Or maybe another recommendation?

I just want a looksee but obviously it has to be someone with experience, who can tell an innocent mole from something that will knock me off my feet.

For a similar query, I'm satisfied with the dermatology department at Ram Hospital.  It's located in the newer set of buildings along the moat to the south of the main hospital.  For a consultation fee of 500 baht your mind can be put at ease.  Call the main number 053-920-300 and ask for dermatology.

I would second that. The (lady) dermatologist knows her stuff, is attentive and reassuring.

Dr Virachaporn or Dr Chatbongkotch at RAM, both ladies, both very experienced in treating skin cancer problems. I'm living proof of that. I am there every 10 weeks and have been for 11 years +.I am a chronic sufferer, in my late 70's.Problems all due to my early years of surfing ,outdoor sports etc.

I gained the impression, perhaps wrongly, from other posters that these drs are inclined to burn off any dark coloured 'blemishes'-rather than take the much more selective approach I am used to in UK.  Am I wrong?  I would be very happy to be corrected.

Not true at all. If they have any doubt they will remove, partially or wholly, for testing.

Results are available within days.

The reason I am there every 10 weeks is to catch anything in its early stages. I undergo an average of 10 freezings each visit but have had surgery when required.

In my home country Australia Melanoma is responsible for around 2,000 deaths every year, including 2 of my close friends. Regular check ups are a sensible option if you are, like me, in the high risk category ie fair skin, blue eyes ,previous long unprotected exposure to the sun.

You can see the Doctors CV's on the RAM web site both are very experienced

I visit Dr Vachiraporn at least twice a year and this is not my experience. On the last visit, for example, she spent quite some time inspecting a very dark mole under a magnifier before pronouncing that it did not need to be removed.

For the OP: the phone number to make an appointment to see her is 053 920372

Why not go to their private clinics where the cost will be 1/2 the price?

No. Neither do I use Aldara or Efudex as they both have an adverse effect on the surrounding normal skin. Liquid Nitrogen does it for me,the affected spot blisters and is gone within 2-3 weeks and seeing and treating ones back is out of the question.

I am quite satisfied with the service & price I am charged at RAM and it may well be Liquid Nitrogen & the applicator are not used at their clinics. I've never asked.

I inquired and was told that
a call in advance would be necessary so they could obtain the nitrogen and that the queues were long.

You sure about half price or guessing based on other data?

Guessing only. Every one of my doctors that charge 400-500 to see them at the hospital clinics charge 200-250 at their private clinics. I don't know the two doctors mentioned, but I once inquired about laser treatment by Dr. Siri at Sriphat and the cost was about 7,000 Baht. He charged me 1,700 Baht at his private clinic.

Do you have contact information for the 2 doctors at RAM mentioned above?

I searched for Dr Vachiraporn but didn't find anything.

Thank you, and other posters who corrected me. good to know they are suitably selective!

It would be remiss of me to not emphasize the importance of professional management of potential melanomas.

I had my first Basel Cell Carcinoma removed at the age of 38 that was 39 years ago.

Since that time I have without exaggeration 100's of issues dealt with including 2 melanomas on my back which I obviously could not see and were only noticed during regular check ups in Australia.

I wouldn't be here today if my Dermatologist had not identified them in their early stages.

Method of removal over the years has been by liquid nitrogen (freezing) scraping,  laser (close to eye) and surgery.

There are products for self removal if you want to go it alone but without professional management you can never be 100% sure exactly what you are dealing with.

Professional evaluation is not expensive if you value your future health. it is of course a personal choice

Dr. Virchiraporn at Chiang Mai Ram is the BEST, she speaks perfect English as she did her residency at Boston General and aside from that fact she knows her stuff. I have been seeing only her for my continual skin issues and just this morning she gave me a clean bill of health for the two surgeries she did on my chest last week. I get a full body examination from her three times a year and at that time she freezes some spots, scrapes some or does a surgery. If I see something suspicious IMO I simply go to the Skin Clinic, request an appointment and never have to wait more a few days. Dr. Amy as she like to be called is head and shoulders above the other Dermatologists in Chiang Mai, IMO.

To say that she is the "BEST" is strictly your opinion.

Do you have details for their clinics please !

P.s. just read that you don't know if they even have private clinics, makes the comment a bit pointless really.

All physicians have private clinics. I've only known of one who doesn't but he is a young guy and as I understand it, recently moved to C.M. At least one of the ones mentioned has a private clinic. Just do a search in Thai language - simple. It's there.

To close the topic by giving my choice, I ended up going to the private clinic of Dr Siri. He is a highly regarded Chiang Mai Univ, and the associated hospital, dermatologist and teacher, according to what I read on the web. His clinic is past Thapae Gate, in the direction of traffic, maybe a couple of hundred meters. There is a pharmacy next to it.

It was crowded with patients about 6 pm, but he goes through them quickly.

He seemed competent enough, and I will probably go to him again. The charge was 320 baht for the consultation, and to put some acid on a small skin tag.

Last I heard, Dr. Siri no longer attends that clinic, and can be seen only at the newer wing of Maharaj Hospital. Are you certain you saw Dr. Siri, and not the doctor who replaced him ?

I can't imagine Dr. Siri sold his clinic. His mail order business and patients coming for refills even if he is not there is a cash cow.

He does occassionally take a few weeks off and another CMU Professor comes to cover his night clinics.

When I walked in I asked the desk the doctor's name and was told Siri.

And I was chatting with a CMU student while waiting- she referred to him as Siri.

The Dr. Siri also attends the Dermatology Clinic at Sriphat Hosp's Center for Excellence. The clinic is open every day and staffed with competent trained dermatologists. This is a clinic and no appt needed but you may wait some time.  Arrive 9am and take a number.  Cost generally low, English well spoken. I am sure they can handle any skin-related issue.

I saw Dr. Siri at the Clinic on a Thursday, his day of attendance.

Not really. At his private clinic, yes - but he does not do any surgical procedures there. I don't think he does much anymore at the new(ish) Sriphat building across the street  under the 7K mark. Other doctors under him maybe less, but not him.
