webfact Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 Malaysian tourist faces charge after five Thai workers killed in road accident By The Nation A Malaysian woman was charged with reckless driving after her car allegedly ploughed into six highway workers, killing five and injuring the other in Songkhla on Tuesday, police said. Police charged Malinda Susilalinee Asalan (not official spelling), 30, with reckless driving causing death and injuries following the accident at 3pm on the Asia Highway in front of the Asia Rescue Unit in Moo 3 village in Tambon Khuha Tai in Songkhla’s Rattaphum district. The car allegedly driven by Malinda lost control and ploughed into six workers of the Kamphaeng Phet Highway District office, who were cutting weeds on the roadside. Five workers died at the scene, with another severely injured. Police said Asalan was driving with two woman friends, also Malaysians, from Phuket to return to Malaysia when the accident occurred. Police said the driver was being detained at the Rattaphum police station. If her relatives do not turn up to seek her release on bail, police will seek an order from the Songkhla provincial court to extend her detention pending formal charges in court at a later date. Police said the Malaysian embassy in Thailand and the Malaysian Consulate in Songkhla have been informed of the accident and were trying to help the tourist under Thai laws. The embassy and the consulate will coordinate with the tourist and her family regarding payment of compensation to the families of the victims, and the embassy will later issue a statement on the case. Families of the five slain victims are holding funeral rites at temples in Songkhla’s Kuan Niang and Rattaphum districts. Rattaphum district chief Pimthada Chansuriya said she and representatives of government agencies concerned will visit the families of the victims and coordinate with the agencies concerned to pay compensation to the families.
