I've met men in my life who try to prove their manhood by trying to break every bone in my hand with a King-Kong-vice-grip handshake when I first meet them.  It's like they're trying to overcompensate for something.  I make sure they know I don't appreciate it.  The OP sounds like one of those guys.

      It is not their formal way of greeting so they are unaware. But, I stopped shaking hands with Thai males after noticing they rarely wash their hands after going number 2.
