DPM Somkid admits he no longer controls national economic affairs

Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak said today that he is no longer directly in charge of Thailand’s national economic affairs, but merely oversees four related ministries.

He gave his assurance, however, that Thailand’s economic fundamentals remain strong and there is no need to be panicked into issuing new economic stimulus packages in the wake of a global economic slowdown.

Citing the case of Singapore, which is also experiencing a slowdown, Somkid said that the island state stays calm and works to deal with the problem. “Everyone must help out, wake up and help themselves. Thailand’s economy is not that bad,” said the deputy prime minister.

Quite likely. He's just standing behind someone else to avoid being hit in face when it does. But guess who he's standing behind:

"This drawback explains why it is necessary to have an “economic cabinet”, headed by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, to ensure that the economic policies of each ministry are complementing one another for the benefit of the country."

Oh buugger! It 's our our illustrious leader.

True to form, it is for everyone to "help themselves" as all those in government positions do!

That is , the rich will continue to get richer and the poor will get deeper in debt.

"that Thailand’s economic fundamentals remain strong".... and what fundamentals would these be? Falling foreign investment? A tourism sector with so many conflicting numbers no one has a clue what's really going on? The suspiciously strong baht baht?

Or perhaps he's using the 'Shopping Mall Index', because no one would argue that that seems to be performing very well.

DPM now stands for "Department of Promises Management."

He will be the one to blame for failure.

Actually Somkid is a highly respected and very competent finance minister.  He has maintained the Thai finances such that many see the Thai Baht as a haven currency with the strength of the Yen, US Dollar etc.

Hands in the till...seems everyone in power loves the high Baht.  And why not?  ChiComs keep pouring hot money inflows into Bank of Thailand.  This benefits many.

He seems to have his nose out because the PM has appointed himself supreme commander of the economy which must be very humiliating for him considering all the work he did and the support he gave to Prayut during the glory days of junta. Now he has virtually been tossed aside like an old boot.

Now it seems Somkid is nothing more than a PR salesman who is given impossible jobs like forming trading relationships with near bankrupt dictatorships like Turkey.

Desperate days ahead!

Certainly the Thai economy is not the best, tell us how the situation really is, the rich are speculating on the increasingly strong Baht, the prices of essential things are increasing and the disadvantaged part of the people does not know how to reach the end of the month .
A healthy economy needs ALL the people to stay that way!
