Phuket air quality early this morning registered a healthy 42, but is expected to deteriorate slightly throughout the day. Image: PCD

PHUKET: The chief of the Phuket Provincial Health Office (PPHO) has called for the public to not panic about air quality in Phuket amid heavy haze from Indonesian fires smothering Songkhla, to the south.

Malaysia to the south has been heavily affected by the haze, with 409 schools closed earlier this week amid health concerns for children.

While the haze has abated in other regional areas to the south, Hat Yai in Songkhla remains heavily affected, with an official air quality rating of 162, marked by the Pollution Control Department (PCD) as red warning of “Unhealthy”.

Don't forget this is the 42 in a Thai scale, in the Netherlands the safe limit ends at 25, everything above it is not healthy, but  the green looks so good for the tourists right?

Incorrect. If you compare the same scale you will see that right now, while writing this, the airquality index is in e.g. Velsen 53, Amsterdam 46, Rotterdam 50. see here, http://aqicn.org/map/netherland/

Both 46 is still deemed good, both 50 and 53 are deemed moderate. Outside of 'The Randstad' it is better.

Yes, I've heard it will only take about 25cm rise in sea levels to submerge that country.

Less the that if we would not have takes precautions for that, some parts are even more then 5 meter below sea level.

That's the point, you compare with the same scale ( website) I use the european website https://airindex.eea.europa.eu/

There you will see that even if it 34 the air quality is already poor and not green or even blue.1169296943_Roubaixtoday.JPG.0c87c069ba5572ec76ed54dbb2a6f891.JPG

And it looks like you can't compare the scales. Your scale indicates good for most of the Netherlands, even Randstad, where on the other scale it was around 46 or so. So apples to apples it is good, meaning on Phuket it is even better with just 42.

In other words, 42 on the Thai scale is not the same as 42 on the European scale.
