PHUKET: Patong Mayor Chalermluck Kebsup has confirmed to The Phuket News that lifeguards at Patong Beach will be hired year round, full time from Oct 1.

The news comes amid concerns that the contract with Phuket Lifeguard Service (PLS) to provide lifeguards on the beach is to expire on Sept 30, just before the deadly month of October, when rip currents and strong surf brought on by the southwest monsoon become especially dangerous.

“From Oct 1, we will hire each lifeguard individually. We will be hiring the same number of lifeguards, the same ones that are protecting tourists at our beach now,” she said.

wouldn't matter if they had a life guard for every tourist, they'd find a way to drown themselves anyway..

Indeed, if they can't respect the red flags and verbal warnings from the life guards, they're doomed.

He does understand that they'll have to be paid, too.  Hiring isn't enough.

I know that the gender issue is sometimes confusing in Patong but I think you will find that "He" is actually a "She" ????

There appears to be quite a few Chinese involved in the drownings/life-saving attempts recently.

Is that because:

- the signs aren't in Chinese?

- the Chinese don't understand what the red flag means. Perhaps they think their hosts are being nice by displaying the colour of their country's flag?

- they're just ignorant?

I've read here that the warnings are in Chinese as well, though I cannot verify. Apparently they use red also for a danger warning. I don't know why they seem to die a lot, perhaps it's just the number of them increases their odds as a nationality..

Seemingly, no move towards advancing society is to be missed by pessimism.

I guess if they didn't drown themselves on a regular basis I'd be more optimistic..
