Premchai, his wife and an aide acquitted of illegal possession of ivory

Italian-Thai Development boss Premchai Karnasuta, his wife Mrs. Kanitta and her close aide, Ms. Wandee Sompoom, were today all acquitted by the Criminal Court on charges of illegal possession of and concealment of four ivory tusks.

In acquitting the three defendants, the court said it believed in Mrs. Kanitta’s claim that she inherited the ivory, including two African tusks, from her mother about three decades ago.  The tusks were legally registered by Mrs. Kanitta’s mother in 1978.

Since the tusks were legally owned by Mrs. Kanitta, the court said that she could not be found guilty of illegal possession, as charged by the public prosecutors and, because the ivory was owned legally, the court also said there was no grounds to find Mr. Premchai guilty of covering up his wife’s possession of the ivory in question.

....................according to a 2019 document

That's exactly my earlier point about WATCHMAN. Somebody helped engineer an escape here.

Wouldn't we all just love to see that original, dated receipt (an authentic one).

And why then did they bother to prosecute? Unless there is no real Mothers receipt.

Truth be told the tusks were registered, then what a waste of time, for all stake holders.

I'd have a bitch of a time finding the receipt or legal registration for something that I acquired circa 1978.

It sounds to me like WATCHMAN might have consulted here.

OP says it was part of an inheritance. An item of such value plus relevant paperwork would be listed. I think it's equally easy to believe some underhand things going on or the authorities wasting time and effort. That said - there was some story about a dead black cat or something.....?

I do know associated issues embroiled the leopard case that was unnecessary.

Because its Thailand and they smelt money. This whole thing has been a circus. Watching this all from the sidelines was like hyena frenzy. He poached, he got caught, he was fined. They tried so hard to destroy his whole life and that of friends and family. Not because of justice but simply they smelt money. I am not condoning what he did.

When did the incident rear its head?  Maybe it took so long for the "document" to be found as they had to "discover/uncover" paper old enough to appear appropriately dated on which to draw up the receipt rather like forgers do.

'nuf sed.

Have seen carved ivory on sale in a few markets across Thailand, why are they allowed to sell them?

I am going to bet that it’s not real ivory ... even if they say it is.

The court would or would not do thorough testing of all possible data depending on it's agenda.
Obviously in this case too much data is not in line with the agenda of this court, as the outcome is predetermined.

The year of the death of the elephant as well as the age of the tusks can easily be obtained by measuring radioactive carbon-14 deposited in tusks and teeth by open-air nuclear bomb tests, the method reveals the year an animal died, and thus whether the ivory was taken illegally.

But they did not do it.

shortly after his arrests he tried to bribe park officials - for that attempt he has 1 year jail sentence given to him in April.

he did bribe some officials, that's why arresting him officers were demoted from their duties, but were reinstated in few weeks.

yesterday department of national parks said it would appeal acquittal.

what is sure that he is able to bribe courts, much easier and beneficial, than bribing police and prosecutors. With his billions he is untouchable
