Khun Paul Posted October 8, 2019 Share Posted October 8, 2019 I remember in the early 70's while serving in Hong Kong, Chinese also used to gamble on Mahjong , saw chap throw himself off the 20th floor because he had lost everything, including his wife and house, not that is serious . hotchilli Posted October 8, 2019 Share Posted October 8, 2019 I think the main reason why gambling is still illegal in Thailand is that if it was allowed the corruption/graft/money laundering etc etc would be so great it would be out of control. Big men would influence the outcome of everything therefore it's hardly gambling. Apart from a percentage of Thais losing everything you also have the flip side of others gaining winnings.. addiction as in all other aspects of life comes down to ones own self-control, like drink or drugs. On a recent visit to Cambodia, it was incredible to see the massive foundations being dug. There is no local airport for Chinese Airlines to fly in punters, and I was informed that Thai gamblers are the intended customers. Evidently at weekends, the car parks on the Thai side at Aranyaphratet, are totally packed - avoid like the plague!! Another Chinese Special Economic Zone in the making?? They're still together which I find shocking. My wife used to play with her friends. Very low stakes, a great day or bad day would equal maybe + / - $5.00. I morning I woke up at around 2 am and she still wasn't home. I went to find her and brought her home with the admonition: It's me, your house and life OR the game. Choose...now! She chose smartly. Borrow money to pay the debt, not able to borrow enough so gambling what someone gave you to get out of debt to get more seems like the only option 'in a gamblers head' and quickly have nothing and people threatening family members and so called friends taking your kids toys as collateral. Interestingly they did not seem to provide contact number for assistance for both the gambling and the debts, they could in my view set these up in every 7/11 just to cater for the extent of the problem they have in Thailand on this front. If you are not addicted to anything then it is unlikely that you can understand the concept. Dying is not an end point in all addictions. However, loosing family, friends, money, home, job, car, health, sanity and more is possible.
