Less stress in retirement for me means having money in the bank and health insurance.

The money requirement has not changed regarding Visa extensions.

90 day reports, TM 30 and such take an hour of my time very infrequently.

And being of retirement age, if you are living without health insurance, you are always just a day away from bankruptcy in my opinion.   Heck in the USA where I am from, they wont even treat you at 95% of the hospitals unless you have insurance, and the ones that will, you are likely to bleed out in a waiting room

The USA is the worst example of health care in the western world and is hardly a good example to quote. The structured fear of ill health in the USA is one of the many inhuman agents of oppression. This fear is virtually unknown in Europe. However, travel/medical insurance is desirable when travelling a long way from home. For people from medically civilised countries staying in Thailand medivac insurance would be a good policy.

Well im not wrong I said no agent can afford to leave 400/800k in a bank account
hes not leaving it in hes bunging an IO according to you
the 400k law was aimed at the agents more than the individual IMO
that there is still that corruption in the IO office just counters what the law is meant to be doing

The agent and the IO is effectively one and the same. The former a conduit to the latter they exist symbioticly. And dont forget about the bank!

if you have a Marriage Visa 400,000 Thai Baht how much Interest Earnings will the Bank be paying you

Many are always pointing out that the bank interest on the money left in bank for their Visa is low and they could be making higher interest elsewhere.  If you made 10% on investment of 400,000 baht you are losing $1000 USD a year by keeping it in a thai bank for Visa extension purposes.

But basic cost of living is cheaper in most areas of Thailand, so you make that up in other ways.

Best to accept things and "go with the flow" or move to where the "Grass is Greener" as they say.

So far, so good for me in Thailand since 2000.

No money needed in a Thai bank account, no mandatory transfer of 65000 needed.

I do my 90 days on line, TM30 is done by management of the place I stay.

No insurance needed, as I have an extension based on a non-immigrant O.

Well OK, I have to pay now 1900 for an extension, many years ago it was 500 Thb.

I don't know what the future will bring, I am ready to abide to many things, if it is financially possible.

The Euro was at a certain moment 50 Thb, it is now 33.

When it was 40-50, I was younger (much younger) , thus more desiderata.

Now being older I can manage with the 2000 Euro I transferred / transfer monthly, voluntarily to Thailand since 2000.

When I decided to live here permanently 20 years ago, I had a plan B & C.

At 71 now, I really hope I will not have to use them.

Yes, I really do not know what new things have regularly come up that has made being in Thailand unpleasant.   As someone with over 20,000 posts perhaps you can enlighten me, specifically.   And that would be NEW things, plural, that have appeared regularly.

I am not wasting my time going through things that the majority of members are well aware of, just keep logging on to Thaivisa and maybe things will sink in, and I am aware that the TM situation is not new and has only recently been enforced.

Another thing, I am aware of your opinions and you are entitled to them, but you are about the last poster I want to have a debate with.

I am all for that, I think government spinning BS story.

I would love to know exactly how many expats do not pay their hospital bills, what I read and see in Issan country far out weighs the BS the government is spinning about billions of Barht being spent to pay for 'farangs' hospital bills. I myself and all my friends pay their own way with medical costs either with health insurance or pay as you go. I think this new BS policy for expats living here is a cooked up kick-back scheme through the big nobs in government and their mates in the health insurance industry. Realistically, take a look at the existing government hospital payments for Thais, 30B to see a doctor and then maybe a few more Barht for some pills and operations one third the price a farang pays. Thais appear to pay very little here for medical costs. Many people will say, Thais cant afford more money for medical costs, I don't believe that, Thais seem to have enough money to pay for a new pick up or M/C on HP and buy alcohol and smokes, but not enough to pay a few extra barht for medical treatment. The health system in Thailand needs a big shake up by the government to help fund its hospitals. Stop relying on tourists, foreign investments, massive taxes on all imports, growing rice that nobody wants, and draining the pockets of expats to prop up their failing economy. Have I left something out.

You left out, Why they don't move Casino's into Thailand and recover the lose of all that money.

Why they don't go ahead and make Cannabis legal, and for export, and make more money.

Why they don't get rid of that stupid keep it in the Bank rule, so that money can be put into the economy.

And Why they don't follow the example of all the other S.E. Asia countries, and make their

Visa rules simple and easy ?

As Forest Gump said "Stupid is as Stupid Does"

It's reasonable to expect an adult to have health insurance or to be able to fund unexpected medical emergencies.

However , problems with this scam are the following:

  • Thais, NOT Farang, will be defaulting at far higher rates than any Farang.
  • In an decent country, foreigners have legal recourse against locals who harm them, but in Thailand the courts will almost always allow locals to without penalty
    • Assaulting them with deadly weapons
    • Running them over with autos
    • Electrocuting them due to faulty electric wiring
    • Causing severe food poisoning and other gastric issues due to poor food hygiene
    • Cancers due to the use of pesticides that have been banned in almost every other part of the world, sometimes for decades

Thailand is not a normal country - it's closer to North Korea than Norway.

Get out while you can!

Good luck.

Thanks for response, cant prove anything of course. Just pisses me off when you read the BS the government puts out. Thais seem to a one track mind on how to run the economy, rely on Tourism, foreign investments, high import taxes on all imported goods and bleed expats for more money, if they really think this new health insurance scheme is going to fix their failing hospitals budgets, their got rocks in their heads. Their mentality here is to raise money from every source that is not Thailand based, and try to run their economy without taking money from their own people. How many expats will have to leave the country if they are refused medical insurance.??

In 1986, Congress enacted the Emergency Medical Treatment & Labor Act (EMTALA) to ensure public access to emergency services regardless of ability to pay. Section 1867 of the Social Security Act imposes specific obligations on Medicare-participating hospitals that offer emergency services to provide a medical screening examination (MSE) when a request is made for examination or treatment for an emergency medical condition (EMC), including active labor, regardless of an individual's ability to pay. Hospitals are then required to provide stabilizing treatment for patients with EMCs. If a hospital is unable to stabilize a patient within its capability, or if the patient requests, an appropriate transfer should be implemented.

I never mentioned the word "Emergency" in my post on the health care system in the USA.

Regardless, have had good, immediate treatment and consultation here in LOS at minimal cost

And that's why  KMartinHandyman mentioned.

In the US when ill and don't have insurance, all you have to do is go to the emergency room, say that you are not feeling well , that you have a sore through and fear you are dangerously ill and by law they are required to treat you. . As far as waiting, the wait time is the same with insurance holders as it is with non insurance holders.

That's part  of the reason why medical costs are so much higher in the US than other countries , and outcomes are worst.

Many of the uninsured get their medical treatment at the emergency room where it is much more expensive, and by such time that it has become much more serious, Resulting on higher costs and worst outcomes.

The TM30 requirement has always been there, has it affected you personally in the last 12 months or so or are you just mentioning what Thaivisa posters have been moaning about generally?  What is your own personal experience of the TM30 and IB?

Are you on a retirement extension?  If so, the medical insurance cannot have affected you as it, so far, it does not apply to us.

Income requirement has been the same for years, that enforcement has not become "stricter" unless you have not been able to comply in the past and you have winged it, surely?

You do realize that different Royal Thai Immigration offices use different interpretations of the laws/regulations? Other offices have stated that there is no need to refine a TM30 when returning to the same home address. Other offices have told Expats that is required, including Chiang Mai. Returning To my already filed home address from a domestic trip on October 22 so, I will be at Immigration as required October 23.

The following was sent to those of us using the cited agency. They asked the question and this was the response they received from Chiang Mai Immigration so again this is the international for enforced concerning the new medical insurance requirement. “

Update on Health Insurance for OA visas.
Please note this is only for Chiang Mai immigration. They have confirmed that any person who has previously held and OA visa and then extended it inside Thailand WILL NEED health insurance for the renewal. This means if you arrived 3 years a go on an OA visa and since then have been getting extensions in Chiang Mai, you will need to show health insurance at your next extension. For those that do not qualify for insurance or cant obtain it, your option is to leave and then reapply for a NON 0 visa and then get a 1 year extension based on Retirement. Please note that health insurance isnt currently required for the Non 0 Retirement extensions. For any questions contact [email protected]

The income requirement previously allowed for my honestly stating that I brought into Thailand for my retirement support an amount of a minimum of 65 K a month. There was no need to show that this amount was not an average.

If Thailand scraped all the current Visa rules and Laws, and Followed the Example of All

the other S.E. Asia Nations, with simple Visas where you pay once for a year, they would

save all the money required to pay so many "Make Work" Government employees, save all

the time and expense of doing multiple copies of the same paper work, save the cost of

all the paper needed for all the forms, save the cost of all the supporting Departments,

release all the money tied up in Banks into the Economy, reduce the Smog an Expense

needed for running around to Immigration Offices, ect, ect.

And Finally Making Thailand a Happier place for All, which is what I was told is the number

one thing this Government was all about.  What Happened ?

Then Thais should stop voting for politicians that pay them the most.

Till Thais start voting on the issues and not the bribe, nothing is going to change.

Face is a very big factor, and as with the stupid information form we used to have to fill in, once sufficient time has passed, things may change. Just to go bull headed making a fuss is probably not going to make them back down as would lose face.

Actually admitting a mistake was made and changing it is something I have not seen in LOS.

Before anything else, one has to discover the real reason for the changes in the first place. Perhaps they really do want to get rid of farang expats.

Meeting about TM 30? Has anything changed as a result?
