Are you flying in on Thai? They often have connecting flights through to Chiang Mai. Even if you want to take a break for few days can be arranged.

Bangkok Air most expensive.

Use Thai Airways or ThaiSmile air.

Prebook or not depends on exact date/time of arrival?

If it falls on a long Thai holiday weekend e.g.: prebook!

Is checked baggage more than 20 kilos?

ThaiSmile has 5 flights.

Genuine Thai Airways (more expensive) has another 5 flights.

ThaiSmile is the low cost offspring from Thai Airways.

Don't book ThaiSmile via Thai Airways site, more expensive.

Avoid "Thai Vietjet" under all circumstances.

Unreliable, bad service.

I have had a couple times when I decided to take trip at last second.

Was able to go to airport, get ticket and board flight within 30-45 minutes.

Last time, I flew with Thai Airways,  but usually go thru Bangkok Airways.

SWISS arrives at 9:35 AM?

So on a "normal" day out of high season you can risk without prebook.

Trying to find out about Bangkok Air (site): in the "waiting queue" since two minutes or so

thai airv

and bangkok air are the only real options you have if arriving at 9.30am

flights leave just after mid day and one pm

air asia have a departure every hour almost but its dmk
The free shuttle that runs to and from BKK and DMK has a transfer time of anywhere from 50 minutes to two hours depending on time of day and traffic. Taxi rates between BKK and DMK or vice versa should run approximately 350-450 baht. There will be some small toll fees in addition to the fare (approx 60-65 thb)

Seems like Bangkok Air has a "sale" currently, but the website is spinning wheel waiting in the "queue". 47/48 Euro is an OK price, about 1600 Baht.
