BANGKOK (NNT) - The Prime Minister has granted awards to 53 local administrative organizations, in recognition of their excellent management in fiscal year 2019, stressing the government’s preparedness to work together with local administrations, and their important role in creating understanding among villagers.

The Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha presided over an awards ceremony honoring the 53 local administrative organizations for their transparent management and good public participation.

The Prime Minister congratulated all award winners on their excellent work and high standards, stressing that local administrations are important bodies in achieving national development, and asking award-winning organizations to help mentor other local administrative organizations to improve their strength and performance, and to encourage the organizations to update themselves on legal matters and correct budget protocols, as well as implementing more digital technologies to better reach out to villagers, to enable their fast development and good governance.

He said the government wishes to promote its policies, and national strategies, while creating understanding among members of the general public, of ways to improve their quality of life and allow them to gain more income. He assured the public of the government’s intention to provide support and take good care of local administrations, promising local elections next year when everything is ready.

Three local administrative organizations won this year’s grand prizes totaling 15 million baht in cash rewards. Special awards were given to 125 administrative organizations passing the evaluation as incentives for improvements. The evaluation was made according to strict criteria based on transparency and concrete outcomes from good governance, effectiveness, public services, innovations, and efficient budget management maximizing the public and the nation’s benefit.

I find it difficult to understand how so many people can receive awards day by day, when I see the incessant bowing, kneeling and scraping on Thai TV each night. Are all these people going out of their way to do more than they get paid for, and is there any objective assessment of their performance?

I occasionally see, and accept there are people who by nature give better service than one expects or pays for, but rarely does such efficiency manifest itself in major organisations, such as banks, civil service, immigration etc. IMHO bureaucracy is 'king' in Thailand!
