If you have a flight leaving Thailand in the early hours of the 5th but your permission to stay date ends on the 4th is it OK to pass through immigration before midnight on the 4th to avoid any overstay?

The question arises only if you leave in the early hours of the 6th.

I'd try to pass through before midnight, but don't get your panties in a wad if you don't make it because they won't check you in for your flight early enough.  You get a 24 hour grace period before they start fining you.  

 

That happened to me exactly the same way...  No fine, no overstay stamp, no lecture.
