17,000-strong police provide security measures during 35th ASEAN Summit

Out walking along Sukhumvit Road tonight, the police appeared to have stationed one or more officer at EVERY corner and driveway along both sides of the street. The apparent purpose being, to ensure that absolutely no vehicle traffic can come out on the main road when the VIP convoys are passing by.

Good to know he has a translator on hand. We wouldn't want people to think that a man who was the commander in chief of a sovereign nation’s army, and current prime minister married to a former English teacher, has less grasp of the English language than a bar girl.

Yeah I saw that earlier. I saw a bunch of cops at the Dunkin Donuts at Asoke and felt right at home too.

Thet were all smiling and pretty nice, just too many of them.

Exactly. My only problem is that there are too many cops around down in those areas and it reminds me of China and all those other places in Europe where you have cops everywhere. waay to much of a buzz kill. Thank god for seeing this topic, I was going to head downtown so to speak and get me some grub, notice that I forgot SINCE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON that this is going on. Wow.

You might be spot on with Europe but trying to find a copper in China when you want one is like trying to plait sawdust.

Dude when I was in Shanghai there was a gnarly unsmiling cop on every corner. Some of them had those big forked poles for pinning people down...like a human snake catcher.

Indeed, you kind of have to wonder, where did they all come from, and what if anything are they normally doing when they're not blocking off traffic for ASEAN.

I live in the heart of BKK, and normally can go for weeks and never spot a cop anywhere on the streets or on patrol, unless I specifically go looking for them holed up in one of their intersection traffic box stations.

And heaven forbid, you actually need to call them and try to get them to come out to your home.

Security at the Asean Summit and related Summits was the tightest I have seen at any event in Thailand in the last 10 years, commencing with a very wide perimeter around the Impact site.  Inside the Impact area and the meeting areas police and security personnel were literally as thick as bugs on a bumper. Absolutely everywhere. Particularly noticeable were the 'soft skills' being displayed  by the police in their handling of attendees and their security screening. Extremely impressive and first rate.
Overall extremely well organised. Equal to any similar sized event I have attended elsewhere. Thailand did an awesome job.
