PETA targets Pata Zoo

Three women from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) group covered in coloured paint protested on Monday (November 25) in front of the 36-year-old Pata Pinklao Department Store, which has its own zoo called Pata Zoo.

The protesters held a message reading “Let animals show their true colours”, with Thai words when translated saying “Boycott Pata”.

The 35-year-old zoo is located on the rooftop of the store. It was ordered to close in 2015 over a lack of appropriate paperwork, but reopened later after paying a fine. The famous-yet-sad star of the zoo is female gorilla Bua Noi, who arrived there at the age of three in 1993. She was caged alone and came to be recognised for her sad face, pulling her hair out and depressed posture.

PETA wants the owner to understand that caged animals for entertainment is cruel.

According to Yahoo News senior vice president Jason Baker, Bua Noi was forced to live in terrifying and harmful conditions.

PETA offered to help put her in rehab but the owner rejected the offer, saying the zoo obtained proper ownership of Bua Noi and claiming that the depressed posture of the gorilla is her natural trait.

The sad situation of what amounts to an animal prison on the roof of Pata Department Store Pinklao has been going on far too long. Many of the animals exhibit signs of stress. Wish the authorities would free the animals from their cruel captivity and send them back where they originated from.

I often think "peta" goes too far and I don't always support them... BUT in this case they are on point.. if you have a zoo, make sure the critters are contented... gorillas are social animals and deserve to live in a bit of jungle.

There should be a campaign by PETA urging Bangkokians to boycott Pata until they remove the zoo. It's a decaying place as it is, superceded by more recent stores nearby but unless the owner is hit in the pocket the heartless sh.t will do nothing.

A gorilla living alone since 1993, for god's sake....

As always, pay a small fine then you can do whatever you want ...
Not you, you don't have enough money for the under-the-table bundles!

I always thought there is a law against animal cruelty and torture in Thailand ?

The owner should be put and left in that cage , not the gorilla .

The existence of places such as this is rife throughout Asia.   Drugged out tigers and abused elephants are part of the main stream tourist trail.

The most recent generation of Chinese is better educated than any previous generation about the abuses these creatures endure, and many choose not to support this industry.  Like any other industry it is driven by market forces, and for now, the market remains huge.

It would be great to see world governments get on board with this, and hand out brochures to their citizens as they leave the airport to Asian destinations where large scale animal abuse exists.  Educating people on the plight of these creatures is the only thing that will cause attitudes to change.

PETA has always done fine by the animals...and that's just fine by me.

Hooray PETA!

Years ago Pata Zoo even had a Polar Bear suffering in the heat up there .... you know how hot it gets on that roof? It would not surprise me if the poor animal is still there, going insane repeatedly pacing back and forth in its small enclosure. I would like to put the owner of that store in a cage and see how he likes it.

What authorities do we report this to in Thailand? Anyone know?

Pretty sure PETA's got this one. There is a Thai Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (TSPCA)
