Thai economy: Thais staying home and not going out to eat

Thai caption: Not going out, they need to economize

A Suan Dusit poll conducted at the end of last week suggests that Thais are feeling the pinch of a sluggish economy.

They are staying home more, not going out to eat - even looking for special promotions at the supermarket.

They are learning to turn their lights off, repairing things themselves and saving money by living with friends and relatives.

A total of 1,174 people nationwide were asked a series of questions about how they were coping in today's economy.

A total of nearly 70% said they were economising by not going out much, not shopping and eating at home.

Stay at homes amounted to 40%.

Around 23% were keeping a close eye on their daily spending.

About 21% were looking out for specials in the shops and eyeing promotions.

And 19% were taking on extra jobs to make ends meet.

Asked what measures they were taking to save money, a total of 63% were eating in rather than going to restaurants, 38% were putting a ceiling on their food expenditure and 23% were limiting the size of meals and attempting to avoid wasting food.

Some 65% were making sure they were turning off their lights and other electrical appliances, 37% were doing their own repairs and 15% were looking at cheaper rents or living with friends and relatives to save money.

Many put great store by exercising to ward off costs of ill health.

But many said that it was proving hard to save money on things like transport costs.

This poll doesn’t really mean much unless it’s compared to a similar poll taken back at some other point in time.

Because they are the Government, and it"s their job to lie. lol

I've been out to eat once this month (bill was 159bht including a large Leo).

My Thai gf hasn't been out with me for ages, she can't afford to eat out.

When she asks for more money I tell her to find a wealthier lover, but I'm afraid the market for live-in gfs has almost completely dried up (Thai and foreigner employers) in Chiang Mai.

I was last saturday night at a very popular mukata restaurant

usualy packed with Thais (Can accomodate more than 200 customers

usualy 50\100 clients at each of my come here 1 or 2 times every month)

there were only 12 customers (1 table with 3 russians. 1 table with 3 koreans

1 with 4 thais, 1 with myself and the gf). The staff outnumbered the clients.

First time in 2 years i see that at this place.

This is only taking into account "Thais going out to eat".

1. Less money to go out and cheaper to cook at home, especially if multiple people.

2. Food Panda and Grab food, people order in. Same price, don't pay for gas and you can add in your own snacks and drinks at low price and watch your own TV.

In the end the bad economy is good for the environment. ????

The government doesn't want anyone to tell the truth speak/write negatively about the economy, as that might jinx it.

Because the food stalls and restaurants have to pay a high commission, the dishes are a lot smaller compared with the portions on site.

Could this help explain why there are so many brake failure related automobile accidents in Thailand?

Surely this poll should have been blocked from release by the fake news agency?

Yep! yet the "belief" system is so deeply indoctrinated folks struggle to come to terms with the fact they are constantly lied to and accept the fact they are being spied upon! - "divide and rule" and keep people confused with constant lies!

Thailand has learnt this lesson well from the "West"

My mia noi asked for a raise last week. I told her I'd take the request under advisement, but  that she needed to understand that compensation in my world is strictly based on performance incentives... So I'm waiting to see how that one turns out.... :w00t:   j/k...

And meanwhile, in related news:

--the price of bar fines went up.

--the tax on liquor went up

--the exchange rates for foreigners in Thailand went down

--and lots of stray dogs suddenly have been disappearing off my local sois.....

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is the smartest cost saving tip of all. If you can avoid the medical costs associated with chronic disease, you'll save an absolute fortune.

This is not what the government wants. It wants the punters to go out and spend, spend, spend to stimulate the economy.

The new stimulus package is based on domestic tourism and commonly known as the “Eat, Shop, Spend” campaign.

New easy access mortgage loans are being made available in case people need more money.

Staying at home and eating in is bad news for the economy and the country and could be regarded as unpatriotic.

The economy has not been “good” for three or four years. However, no one was supposed to say that and good news was supplied and pumped by the media.  It’s been a long time coming, and everyone knows it’s been coming, which brings us to this point.

Meanwhile the Squawks continue to win ugly. Warts, bone spurs & halitosis, it keeps chugging on down the road.

Actually most places just make the dishes smaller overall as they are not sure which are going where. For example if you stand in line for take away with about 6 Grab drivers, you are going to receive the same as them.

What I can't understand is how the younger Thai's can afford to go drinking every night until 06:00 or 07:00 hrs the following morning, there are plenty of Thai bars along third road from Soi Bongkot up to Soi 17 catering to crowds of people every day

one  bottle of  methylated spirits between 20 people

I don't think this is actually that Thai specific - everywhere there are taxes, wages and rents to pay, the customer sees the spread between the market cost and restaurant cost of food widen. Why did Jamie Oliver go bust? Why is gourmet cooking at the top of viewing lists? Thailand is no different. Eating and drinking out are the first, easiest and largest section of the budget to get trimmed everywhere. Sitting at home for endless hours in the dark and cold doesn't play well against going out for an overpriced meal and beer.

One of their few pleasures which happens to be cheap. Im very pleased that this lifestyle continues. When you say 'young thais' you mean younger than you.
