Thailand’s PM insists military conscription is still needed

 

 

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, a former General, has stressed the need for Thailand to retain military conscription, because the three armed forces are currently more than 100,000 personnel short of their full complement, of which only 30% are expected to enlist voluntarily.

 

Without naming the Future Forward party, which has been campaigning for conscription to be scrapped in Thailand and replaced by a volunteer only military, the Prime Minister said such a campaign is mistaken, noting that national security will be compromised if conscription is repealed.

 

He explained that not every Thai adult will be enlisted into military service, but they are required to register as reservists. When they turn 20 they draw lots to decide whether they will be enlisted or can avoid the draft. “Drawing lots of black and red tickets is one of the choices and this is social justice. Everyone has the right to make the decision [sic],” said the Prime Minister.

Of course conscription is still needed, without it the bullying generals would have no lackies to clean their houses/ cars, or tend their gardens.

Thai army sucks for recruits apparently and apart from China I wouldn't know who would want to take the place, but think more of our countries should still have conscription.. would certainly sort out the chavs.

To the man with a hammer every problem looks like a nail ... a military guy thinks that "conscription" is the solution to a country whose borders are surrounded by ... friendly neighbours?

 

It makes sense for Israel and South Korea ... but not Thailand.

The starting point on removal of conscription,  to attract  would be  military minded men and women. would be a decent wage,

 expulsion of the vulgar intimidation that currently takes place.

Sort out the chavs? Utter nonsense. It empowers working class youth to pursue their criminal aims. It trains the Chavs how to use guns effectively.  It trains the chavs how to fight. It trains the chavs the discipline to work in small gangs, platoons, and how to work together as a team, coordinating,  cooperating,  and following the orders of a gang leader. That is why conscription was stopped inn the UK. The great train robbery was carried out with military efficiency by ex conscripts. Furthermore,  the British generals rejected a conscripted army over a professional volunteer army. The youth were too rebellious,  uncooperative and not scared of the officer class or the system.

1. You end up with a làrge army which you can neither train or deploy, and which is largely made up of people who don't want to be there. Most of the energy skills and experience of those few who do want to be soldiers is devoted to continuously trying to train a succession of unwilling conscripts who are just counting the days until their discharge.

 

2. You still have chavs, it is just that a lot of them are fitter.

Sounds like a local equivalent of the old expression "a few sandwiches short of a picnic".

 

If referring specifically to the navy though, they might want to go with "not playing with a full deck"...

Does everyone have the right to make the decision not to participate? Forcing people to be part of a raffle they don’t want to be in isn’t ‘social justice’. 
 

How about, Dear Leader, you go on a televised debate and present why conscription is good. You could also explain why you didn’t recite your oath properly. Should be easy for a big brave soldier like you .

Thailand's rapidly aging population, along with the ever increasing number of generals with drooling older relatives mean that the need for an increase in conscription has never been more pressing.

No surprise there. This man wouldn't be anywhere near his status should Thailand finally begin to realise that a military have no right to be involved in politics in the 21st century. He would just be another no mark bootlicker in an army that has never battled in a war in recent history.

As others have said no need if you pay a decent wage downsize the army. Make it do what it is designed for too many tasks. But of course the generals dont like that as it means lesscushy positions for them and less need of many generals so of course an army man likes Prayut is against it.

With decent pay and benefits, conscription isn't needed as we've found out in the US. Your won't get rich but the benefits aren't bad if you stick it out for the long term. Even those in the short term can get an education through the military to use outside the system once they leave.

Do you mean all soldiers had to vote together while being watched over by their superior so they would vote for the best of the country for only the one party? Even the news posted this. Without the soldiers being pushed to vote for you know who, it is thought they would have never been elected.

Why should professional armys have to put up with the dregs and chavs?
