Extra pay on public holidays?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I'm employed as a teacher at a public school in Thailand. Today I have been told that I have to work  tomorrow. Am I entitled to additional pay (since tomorrow is a public holiday) ?

I would suggest read your contract as it will be stated in it.

I have spoken to many nurses at the Bangkok hospital, no such thing as extra pay for weekends or holidays. Same same money everyday.

Contract??

"Extra pay" is typically reserved for day workers. Our security guard gets pay and a half today.

You need to check you're contract. If you are entitled to pay you can contact the labor department. The Labor department in Thailand is very strong and works on behalf of the employee.  At our factory if workers work on a holiday we have to pay holiday pay.

PS the labor department works just as hard for expats as they do for Thai.

You are entitled to leave on 13 national holidays per year (plus another 6 days of vacation), but as there are more than 13 national holidays, you will find yourself working on what is considered a holiday.

Only if you get vacation on less than 13 public holidays would you be entitled to overtime.
