Excessive PM2.5 particulate found in ten areas of Bangkok and suburbs

 

 

Air quality in Bangkok and two neighbouring provinces has been fallen below standard, with the amount of PM2.5 dust particles exceeding 50 microns, the Pollution Control Department reported.

 

The amount of PM2.5 particulate in Bangkok, Samut Prakan and Samut Sakhon has been measured at between 29-63 microns, with ten areas in excess of 50 microns.

 

The ten areas are Pathumwan, Bang Kor Laem, Khlong Sarn, Phasi Charoen, Bang Khen, Bangsue, Laksi, Tambon Mahachai of Samut Sakhon’s Muang district, Tambon Om Noi of Krathum Ban district of Samut Sakhon and Tambon Paknam of Samut Prakan’s Muang district.

 

The Department of Pollution Control issued an advisory for people in these areas to take precautions while performing out-door activities.

Indeed.  Come for a vacation.  Come back later for medical treatment.  Win-win.

Not as bad as in Sydney Australia. It’s a no go for tourists as well. 

In Kanchanaburi there is at best 1 day per year when the levels are below 50pm2.5 in the morning. Average is about 100pm2.5 but will spike year round to 500+.

Its like its not so seasonal anymore, its year round.

Poor excuse for a Government have no desire to fix this problem. They couldnt careless. Foreign noses need to be the shape of little piggy noses perhaps so they dont smell it or something?...????

Does this mean the 'giant' vacuum cleaner doesn't work?  Perhaps they should change the filters.

yes but its worst in the cities as its compounded by the stupid allowance of cheap diesel vehicles, cremation burning, poor factory regulation, concentrated open burning.

Great idea, and doubles the tourist numbers

Not strange if everybody is allowed to burn plastics and <deleted> in their garden or drive ancient old trucks and cars.

How is this possible , the authorities removed the smoke belching truck last year, I saw the photo opp....

Looking out over the Bangkok skyline this morning, the dirty looking haze hanging over and between the buildings is awful. Govt really need to do something seriously to reduce it.

Bangkok citizens are lucky. At least they can obtain information on pollution levels and do what they can to limit exposure when they are high. In popular expat towns like Hua Hin and Cha Am, one is obliged to rely on online international forecasting sites, which own up to not being particularly accurate as ground-level equivalents.

 

The Government's Pollution Control Department web site lists only a relative handful of air quality measurement sites, based mainly around Bangkok, and I could find no up-to-date forecasts even for these.  From the list provided, there appear to be no measurement stations at all for the numerous towns and cities between southern Bangkok and Suratani! 

 

If no national network of air quality monitoring network exists, one needs to be built. Or are the authorities worried that the results would scare tourists and would-be retirees away?
